Under the auspices of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, in close collaboration with the Veterinary Council of India, celebrated World Veterinary Day 2023 on April 29, 2023 in New Delhi at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, to recognize and celebrate the vital roles of Veterinarians in animal and human health and ecology. Promoting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity in the Veterinary Profession” is the theme for World Veterinary Day in the year 2023.
Shri Parshottam Rupala, Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Government of India, graced the event as Chief Guest in the presence of Dr. Sanjeev Kumar Balyan, Minister of State of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Shri Rajesh Kumar Singh, Secretary, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, and Dr. Umesh Chandra Sharma, President, Veterinary Council of India (VCI), among other dignitaries.
Shri Parshottam Rupala, India’s Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, addressed the audience and emphasized the significance of India’s livestock sector to the country’s economy. He emphasized that the government’s objective is to increase the efficiency and sustainability of livestock husbandry. Several programs have been revised and realigned in an effort to promote entrepreneurship in the sector. The Ministry is committed to collaborating with all stakeholders for the sector’s comprehensive development. He admired the participation of Veterinarians from across the nation in the event and their involvement in the implementation of Department schemes and programs. During the occasion, Shri Parshottam Rupala unveiled the VCI portal, the draft MSVPR, 2023, and a list of distinguished veterinarians.
Dr. S.K. Balyan highlighted the contribution veterinarians in India make to the national economy by assuring the health and productivity of livestock, which is a vital component of the country’s agricultural industry.
Dr. Umesh Chandra Sharma, President of the Veterinary Council of India, welcomed the Guests and Veterinary officials from the participating States and briefed the audience on the Council’s recent initiatives.

There were approximately 1500 veterinary officials from the states and territories in attendance, and 75 veterinarians were recognized for their excellence. Sessions on One Health, Veterinary Interventions for Wildlife Conservation and Management, and the Role of Veterinarians in the Indian Army were held.
Secretary, VCI thanked all the Dignitaries and Veterinary officials from the States/UTs who participated in the event and congratulated the Department on its success.
