NEW DELHI: Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi arrived in Delhi on Tuesday for a three-day visit after being invited by the Narendra Modi government to be the chief guest for Republic Day.
The Arab leader, 68, will be accompanied by a high-level delegation of five ministers and senior officials.
The President of Egypt has been invited as the chief guest to India’s Republic Day celebrations for the first time.
The Egyptian Army will also send a military contingent to the Republic Day parade.
The Egyptian president visited India in October 2015 to attend the third India-Africa Forum Summit, and he returned in September 2016 for a state visit.
On Wednesday, Sisi will be given a ceremonial welcome at the Rashtrapati Bhavan ahead of his talks with Prime Minister Modi.
S Jaishankar, the External Affairs Minister, will also meet with Sisi.
“The upcoming visit of President Sisi is expected to further strengthen and deepen India and Egypt’s time-tested partnership,” the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a statement on Saturday.
Sisi’s visit is intended to strengthen bilateral ties in a variety of areas, including agriculture, the digital domain, and trade.
On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Sisi will hold extensive talks.
Following the talks, the two sides are expected to sign a half-dozen agreements to strengthen ties in a variety of areas, according to people familiar with the matter.
