“Everything calm so far”: Ambassador Sandhu inspects Indian Embassy after calls for pro-Khalistan protests in US

The Indian Ambassador to the United States, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, arrived at the Indian embassy on Saturday to inspects the premises and annexe

The Indian Ambassador to the United States, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, arrived at the Indian embassy on Saturday to inspects the premises and annexe, as well as assess the security arrangements, in response to threats from pro-Khalistani groups to hold protests outside Indian missions across the United States.

According to officials, there has been no disorder or disturbance outside the Indian consulate, nor are there any indications of protests.

Meanwhile, visuals outside the Indian Consulate in San Francisco showed barricades and police personnel deployed to prevent any untoward incidents in response to pro-Khalistani elements’ Saturday appeals for protests outside Indian missions.

On July 2 in San Francisco, there were arson attempts and violent rhetoric directed at Indian diplomats, including Taranjit Singh Sandhu.

In the meantime, security was increased in front of the Indian embassy in Washington, DC, in anticipation of demonstrations by Khalistan supporters. Metropolitan police and private security personnel were observed assuming positions in front of the Indian embassy.

The police enforcement agency has not issued any permits for demonstrations in front of the embassy.

Since the morning, police vehicles and officials have been seen stationed at the scene, and the entire area has been cordoned off.

“We are prepared to face and address the circumstance. Everything is quiet thus far. We have not seen or heard anything as of yet,” a representative told media.

Additionally, police have been deployed in front of Ambassador Sandhu’s residence, India House.

The execution of Khalistan Tiger Force leader and designated terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada precipitated these demonstrations. He was sought on terrorism charges in India.

After his demise, demonstrations were held in cities such as Melbourne, San Francisco, and Toronto, among others.

This was followed by posters containing threats against the Indian ambassadors to Canada and the United States, as well as the Toronto consulate general.

The posters also announced Saturday rallies in front of Indian missions in the United Kingdom, San Francisco, and Canada.

The United Kingdom witnessed a considerably subdued demonstration outside the Indian High Commission in London on Saturday, with only 30 to 40 pro-Khalistanis present between 12:30 and 2:30 GMT. The area’s security was increased after the UK police dispatched additional forces to the scene.

However, at the time this report was filed, the protesters had already departed the site.

Arindam Bagchi, a spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, stated that New Delhi has raised the issue of threats to Indian diplomats in London amid a rise in anti-Indian violence outside diplomatic premises, but that it will judge the UK authorities based on what actually transpires on the ground.

Arindam Bagchi, a spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, stated at a press briefing on Thursday, “This violence against our diplomats and within our diplomatic facilities abroad is unacceptable, and we condemn it in the strongest terms.”

He added, “If there are threats or attacks against our diplomats, as depicted on those posters, we take them very seriously and expect those authorities to take action.”
