The Punjab Police implied on Monday that Amritpal Singh was attempting to establish a milita called ‘Anandpur Khalsa Fauj’, as bulletproof jackets and rifles recovered from the Waris Punjab De chief’s residence bore the initials ‘AKF.’

As the Punjab Police continues to search for the radical preacher, mobile internet and SMS services have been suspended until Tuesday afternoon. The Punjab inspector general of police (IGP) Sukhchain Singh Gill stated in a press conference that 114 individuals were arrested for attempting to disrupt peace and harmony in the state.

“There is calm and stability in the state. There is no lack of law and order…Six criminal cases have been filed against a few members of ‘Waris Punjab De’ for whom special measures have been implemented.

“Four detainees were transferred from custody to Dibrugarh, Assam. Daljeet Kalsi, Basant Singh, Gurpreet Singh Bhukhanwala, and Bhagwant Singh are their names. Harjeet Singh, the uncle of Amritpal Singh, is currently en route to Dibrugarh. He is being transported there,” he said, adding that the National Security Act has been invoked against five individuals sent to Assam.

According to the Punjab Police, the uncle of the pro-Khalistan preacher, Harjeet Singh, and his chauffeur, Harpreet Singh, surrendered yesterday near Bullandpur Gurdwara in the Jalandhar neighbourhood of Mehatpur.

According to the police, Harjeet assisted his nephew in taking over the accounts of “Waris Punjab De,” an organisation founded by singer-activist Deep Sidhu. After Sidhu’s demise in a road accident, Amritpal assumed leadership of the organisation.

The senior Punjab police officer also implicated Inter Services Intelligence (ISI), Pakistan’s espionage agency, in the unfolding events in Punjab. Based on the facts and circumstances that have thus far come to light, we have a very strong suspicion of an ISI connection. We have a strong suspicion of foreign funding as well. According to the circumstances, ISI and foreign funding appear to be implicated”, he stated.
