Karnataka-Goa river have been at odds over the water of the Mahadayi river. Karnataka requested a total of 36.558 billion cubic feet of water in 2018, however the interstate tribunal only gave them 13.42 billion cubic feet.
Pramod Sawant, the chief minister of Goa, announced on Saturday that his administration had asked the Supreme Court to hear the Karnataka-related Mhadei River Sharing Case as soon as possible.
“We have requested that the Mhadei matter be heard by the Honorable Supreme Court as soon as possible. For every drop of water that properly belongs to Goa, we shall keep fighting. The chief minister tweeted that the DPR for Karnataka “had also not gotten the essential Environment clearances.”
“I assure the Goan people that my Government would uphold the interests of Goa,” he continued. A resolution to “vehemently object” to any “attempt of out-of-basin diversion of water from the Mhadei river basin” was overwhelmingly approved by the Goa parliament on January 20.

Goa has opposed diverting the waters of the river, which rises in Karnataka’s Western Ghats. The river then turns around and passes through Maharashtra before coming into Goa as the Mandovi. The coastal state filed a petition with the Supreme Court, alleging that Karnataka shouldn’t be allowed to divert river water.
A Detailed Project Report (DPR) filed by Karnataka for the building of the two dams was recently authorised by the Center.
