To ease the burden of the high retail market prices for this necessary kitchen commodity, the government has decreased the price of tomatoes from Rs 90 per kilogramme to Rs 80 per kilogramme as of July 16.
The government set up mobile vans on Friday to sell tomatoes in Delhi-NCR for a subsidised price of Rs 90 per kilogramme; more cities were added on Saturday.
In accordance with the official notification, the sale of tomatoes started on Sunday at various places in Delhi, Noida, Lucknow, Kanpur, Varanasi, Patna, Muzaffarpur, and Arrah.
Starting on Monday, the discounted tomato sales will be expanded to other sites based on the current market prices in various cities.
To market tomatoes on behalf of the government, mobile vans are used by the National Cooperative Consumers’ Federation of India (NCCF) and the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED).
