Highway pile-up in China results in 16 fatalities and numerous injuries.

On a highway in the province of Hunan, there were multiple collisions involving about half of all vehicles on the road.

Accident on a highway in China: during a span of ten minutes on Saturday evening, about fifty vehicles were engaged in various collisions along a roadway in the province of Hunan.

The authorities said on Sunday that a highway pile-up in central China had resulted in the deaths of 16 people and injuries to dozens more. Footage of the accident that was broadcast on local media showed burning trucks and shattered vehicles.

During the course of ten minutes on Saturday evening, multiple collisions involving about fifty vehicles occurred along a highway in the province of Hunan. According to a statement released by the local traffic police, “some automobiles caught fire” as a result of the collisions.
Video that was republished online by the state-owned People’s Daily showed a number of overturned and crushed cars in addition to many trucks that were on fire and bore the insignia of delivery businesses. A dense cloud of smoke could be seen rising from the scene of the collisions.

According to reports from the traffic police, the pile-up resulted in the deaths of 16 persons, seven of whom were killed in a single collision, while 66 others sustained injuries.

“The injured were instantly sent to hospital for thorough treatment, including eight whose injuries were relatively severe, who are currently showing stable vital signs,” the traffic police stated. “The injured were promptly sent to hospital for treatment.”

The pileup occurred in Changsha, which is the capital of the provincial government, and on Saturday, there were more than 180 people working in rescue who were called to the scene.

On Sunday, the Ministry of Emergency Management in China announced that it has requested an investigation into the circumstances behind the tragedy.
