The number of people hospitalised in China due to COVID-19 reached its greatest level since the beginning of the pandemic in the week leading up to January 15. This was the highest level since the pandemic began. According to a weekly report that was issued on January 19 by the World Health Organization (WHO), in contrast to the previous week, there were 70% more people hospitalised in China for the sickness, bringing the total number of patients hospitalised due to the illness to 63,307.
This is the highest weekly statistic that China has released since the first reports of COVID-19 surfaced more than three years ago. At the same time, the World Health Organization (WHO) stated that it did not include the over 60,000 additional COVID-related hospital deaths that were reported by China in the previous week because it was waiting for accurate provincial figures that were broken down by week of reporting.

Beijing abruptly abandoned its stringent anti-virus system of frequent testing, travel restrictions, and widespread lockdowns in the early days of December, following massive demonstrations that occurred before the end of November. The system had been in place for three years. Since then, the number of reported cases has increased among the nation’s 1.4 billion people.
According to the WHO, China has been under-reporting the scale of the outbreak. The WHO has repeatedly asked more complete statistics, including information on deaths, excess mortality, and genetic sequences. China’s failure to comply with these requests has led to the outbreak.

According to Mike Ryan, the emergency director for the WHO, it is possible that the actual number of instances of Covid in China is substantially higher than what is indicated by the official figures. Without any prior notice, hospitals rushed to find beds and blood, pharmacies rushed to get medications, and government officials rushed to set up special clinics. The zero-Covid lockout was unexpectedly lifted. According to the estimates of the professionals, there could be more than a million fatalities of covids in China in 2023.
Recent years have seen a significant uptick in China’s overall immunisation coverage rate. The question of whether or not the subsequent weeks would allow for the administration of sufficient immunisations to prevent the effects of an Omicron wave remained unanswered.
