I have a lot of sympathy for Moeen: Nathan Lyon

Nathan Lyon stated that he has sympathy for the 36-year-old as it’s very tough to ball in Test cricket all of a sudden.

Due to Jack Leach’s unfortunate injury prior to Ashes 2023, Moeen Ali was asked to come out of retirement and participate in the ongoing Australia series. The veteran all-rounder complied with captain Ben Stokes, but he did not enjoy his first match since his long-awaited return.

Notably, in addition to conceding a large number of runs, the cricketer injured his hand while bowling and used a prohibited relief spray. In the end, he was fined 25% of the match fees, but he received support from Graeme Swann, Harbhajan Singh, and numerous other former cricketers.

In the meantime, Ali’s return to the game’s longest format was quite unexpected. As he was anticipated to travel to the United States for the forthcoming Major League Cricket, he had little prior experience with the red ball. Nathan Lyon, a legendary Australian spinner, stated that he sympathizes with the 36-year-old because it is extremely difficult to bowl in Test cricket all of a sudden.

“I have a great deal of sympathy for Moeen, to be completely honest with you. Not having played red-ball cricket for two years and being forced to bowl a large number of overs. The best way I can probably describe it, although it may sound strange, is a vocalist losing their voice but still planning to perform a concert.

I’ve been there before; it’s quite excruciating: Lyon

Additionally, the legendary Australian spinner discussed grasping the ball. Using Ali’s finger blister as an example, Lyon stated that it is challenging for an off-spinner to generate sufficient spin during the trajectory without sufficient backspin from the seam. Therefore, for Moeen Ali to do so with an injured finger is excruciatingly agonizing.

“As finger spinners, it is extremely difficult to grip the ball, particularly as fielders; we place our fingers on the seam and attempt to spin up the back of the ball. This is where spin, decline, and drift occur. According to The Mirror, Lyon was quoted as saying, “I have a lot of sympathy for him, as I’ve been in a similar situation before and it’s quite painful.”

Notably, Moeen Ali took three wickets in total, and he will be seeking to improve as England currently has few options available.
