Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and MP Priyanka Chaturvedi stated on Saturday that the opposition alliance would back Priyanka Gandhi if she wanted to run for Lok Sabha from Varanasi, expressing confidence that she would win.
“The alliance will work to ensure that she (Priyanka Gandhi) wins if she chooses to run and the Opposition agrees,” Chaturvedi told ANI.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi won the Varanasi seat.
Chaturvedi explained how candidates for Lok Sabha seats would be picked, saying, “During a meeting with all opposition leaders, we will decide who is best suited for which seat.”
The Shiv Sena leader further said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had been condemning the Opposition alliance from “Parliament to Red Fort” since it had “shaken” him and Union Minister Amit Shah.
RAHUL GANDHI TO CONTEST 2024 AMETHI POLLS
Rahul Gandhi will run for the Lok Sabha from Amethi in Uttar Pradesh, according to Ajay Rai, the newly appointed President of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee.
This decision sets the ground for a major electoral battle, as Rahul Gandhi’s candidature pits him against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Union minister Smriti Irani.
Notably, in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Smriti Irani defeated Rahul Gandhi by roughly 55,000 votes in Amethi, a former Congress bastion.
ON DELHI, THE CONGRESS VS. THE AAP
In terms of seat distribution among opposition alliance leaders, the Congress went into damage control mode after its remarks on Lok Sabha seats in Delhi drew a harsh reaction from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
With the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in mind, Delhi Congress leaders met with the party’s top leadership on Wednesday to assess the Delhi unit’s poll readiness
Following the meeting, Congress leader Alka Lamba stated that the party would prepare to run for all seven seats.
In response, AAP representative Priyanka Kakkar stated, “If Congress has already decided not to form an alliance with us, then attending the next ‘INDIA’ alliance meeting is pointless.” Our senior management will determine whether or not to attend the next meeting.
