India aims to improve Logistics Performance Index ranking to top 25 by 2030

In 2018, India’s position on the index was 44th; however, it has since moved up to 38th place in the 2023 listing.

Sumita Dawra, Special Secretary, Logistics, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), has stated that by 2030, India hopes to have moved into the top 25 on the Logistics Performance Index (LPI).

In 2018, India placed 44th on the index, but by 2023, it would be rated 38th. When compared to 2014, when it was ranked at 54th on the LPI, the country has made significant progress.

The DPIIT has been in discussion with the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund about revising the criteria used to determine LPI rankings.

As it is, the LPI used by the World Bank is based on some quite arbitrary criteria. Dawra continued, “We are attempting to introduce objectivity by demonstrating to the World Bank the ways in which we are employing technology to enhance logistics within the country by means of a Unified Logistics Integration Platform (ULIP). She made the comments during a news conference in New Delhi.

The ‘National Logistics Policy (NLP)’ includes the launch of the ‘Unified Logistics Interface Platform (ULIP)’ in September 2022. It’s an effort in the logistics industry with the goal of making conducting business easier by streamlining and optimizing logistical operations, increasing logistics visibility and transparency, and decreasing logistics time and money.

LEADS survey 2022-23 to be launched in October

Meanwhile, Dawra reports that the 2022-2023 Logistics Ease across Different States (LEADS) survey would go live in October.

The LEADS is a data-driven index developed specifically for evaluating the logistics industry in all of the United States’ 36 states and territories. For the purpose of fostering a cohesive logistics ecosystem across the country, the Union government compiled this index by conducting an online survey and soliciting feedback from relevant parties in each state and union territory.

Since 2018, Gujarat has been ranked among the top achievers in four separate surveys.

Govt to announce estimated total logistics cost by end of September

On September 14, Dawra told reporters that the government would soon provide its estimate of the entire logistics cost as a percentage of GDP.

After a 2018 report from the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER) estimated India’s logistics cost at 8.35 percent of GDP, the government received criticism from India Inc. The logistics sector in India is expected to account for 14% of GDP.

“NCAER’s 8 percent of GDP calculation in 2018 has been taken as the baseline for calculation of logistics,” Dawra explained.

ICEGate customs issues to be resolved by November

Dawra further noted that the ICEGate customs issues will be fixed by the end of the month of November.

The new payment method, ICEGATE, allows customers to set up an ICEGATE virtual wallet account as an alternative to internet banking and NEFT/RTGS for paying customs charges online.

Since April 1 of this year, import shipments have been sitting at terminals and ports around the country due to problems with the new payment system.
