The biggest question for Gujarat Titans for their first match is whether or not their key overseas stars will be able to play. David Miller is set to play in the ODI match against the Netherlands. Alzarri Joseph and Odean Smith, on the other hand, just finished a T20I series and will join the team before the first game. Miller wouldn’t be able to play in the match, but Alzarri and Smith might be.
Since David Miller won’t be able to play in the first match, Gujarat Titans will likely use Matthew Wade as a closer. GT can choose either Odean Smith, Alzarri Joseph, or Joshua Little to bowl. But because of how well Alzarri is playing, Gujarat will choose him over the other two. The only problem is getting it. If Gujarat can’t get Alzarri, they should go with Joshua Little.
The other big question for Gujarat Titans would be how to choose an opening wicketkeeper. Wriddhiman Saha did well for Gujarat last year, so he should be given a chance in the first few games. But KS Bharat is another good choice. Bharat has a wide hitting range, which he showed while playing for RCB, but he might have to wait for his chances until Saha doesn’t do well.
Gujarat can also replace Abhinav Manohar and Alzarri Joseph with Odean Smith and Yash Dayal, respectively. So, Gujarat would have another choice for bowling. The team could also choose R. Like Gujarat Titans, CSK would be in a tough spot without Maheesh Theekshana, Matheesha Pathirana, and Sisanda Magala. Theekshana and Pathirana are playing in the T20 series against New Zealand, but Sisanda has been chosen to play for Sri Lanka against the Netherlands. Since these three can’t play, either Mitchell Santner or Dwaine Pretorius will have to sit out.
The choice of Mitchell Santner or Dwaine Pretorius depends more on the pitch and the Indian pacers who are available. The pitch in Ahmedabad might not be very good for spin, so Pretorius should have an edge there. Plus, Mukesh Choudhary is still getting better, so CSK would need Pretorius as a death bowler.
Due to the rule about impact players, CSK can’t put Shivam Dube in their first-choice starting 11. Dube could replace either a batter or a bowler, based on what was going on in the game.
