Iran Anti Hijab Protests: Faizeh Hashmi, daughter of former Iranian President Akbar Hashmi Rafsanjani, was sentenced to five years in prison for participating in the anti-Hijab movement. His lawyer confirmed this on Tuesday (January 10) but did not give any information about the crime under which he has been sentenced. Sources said that Faizeh was sentenced on charges of spreading propaganda against the government.
In September last year, the anti-hijab movement started in Iran after the police killing of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini. Mahsa was detained by Iran’s Moral police on 13 September for not wearing the hijab properly. Mahsa was so badly beaten in police custody that she fell into a coma and died three days later. Following Mahsa’s death, Faizeh was arrested in the capital Tehran on charges of “inciting riots”.
Anti-Hijab Movement: One of the biggest movements in the history of Iran
Demonstrations have been taking place in Iran since September 16 last year and these demonstrations have presented the biggest challenge to Islamic fundamentalist rulers since the 1979 Islamic Revolution of Iran. After Faizeh was sentenced, his lawyer Neda Shams wrote on her Twitter that Faizeh Hashmi was sentenced to five years in prison after his arrest. Sentenced in 2012 as well.
Faizeh is the daughter of Iran’s founding member
Earlier in 2012 too, Faizeh Hashmi was sentenced to jail and banned from participating in political activities on charges of anti-state campaigning in the disputed presidential election of 2009. They have always been on the target of the government. It is known that former President Akbar Hashmi Rafsanjani i.e. his father died in the year 2017. He was one of the founders of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
