A day after formally declaring war, the Israeli military immediately began intensifying its bombardment of Gaza while also working to crush Hamas fighters in cities in southern Israel. Following the declaration of war, Israel was given permission to take “significant military steps” against Hamas. In response, the Israeli army called up over 300,000 members of its reserve forces.
A “complete siege” on Gaza has been ordered by the Israeli defense minister, Yoav Gallant, who stated that he has given the order. This means that the authorities will shut off the electricity and prevent the entry of food and fuel into the region. Following the statement made by the Israeli military that it had “regained control” of the border communities that Hamas had seized, the announcement was made. Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, the main military spokesman, stated that there had been some isolated events, but that there was no active combat. He did, however, caution that there may still be militants in the region, and he stated that authorities were conducting searches.
