‘Know my religion very well’: Mehbooba Mufti on visiting temple in Poonch

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti visited the Navagraha temple in Poonch and offered water to the Shivling there.

Wednesday, the former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Mehbooba Mufti, visited the Navagraha temple in Poonch district and offered water to a Shivling, drawing criticism from both the BJP and Muslim clerics. Thursday, Mehbooba Mufti attacked the clerics and asserted that she understood her religion “very well.”

On day one of a two-day tour of Poonch district, the leader of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) visited the Navagraha temple on the Poonch border and offered prayers. Additionally, she presented water to a Shivling at the temple.

While the BJP disregarded her temple visit as “drama and gimmick,” a maulana in Uttar Pradesh’s Deoband stated that Mehbooba Mufti’s actions were forbidden by Islam.

Mufti Asad Qasmi, national vice-president of Ittehad Ulema e Hind, stated, “Whether Mehbooba Mufti or a common Muslim, everyone is aware of what our religion says, what our religion permits, and what our religion prohibits.”

“This is India, where everyone is free to do as he pleases… However, Mehbooba Mufti’s actions are improper and forbidden in Islam. What Mehbooba Mufti has done will not cause her to lose her religion, but it is contrary to the principles of Islam “said Asad Qasmi.

Thursday, Mehbooba Mufti spoke out and defended her temple visit.

“We are an atheist nation. We adhere to “Ganga Jamuni tehzeeb.” I am respectful of all faiths. I visited a temple constructed by our late leader, Yashpal Sharma ji. It is a magnificent temple. Someone at the temple gave me a container of water with affection. I admired his affection and devotion, and I performed the Jal Abhishek of Shiv Lingam “said Mehbooba Mufti.
