According to RAI state media, the Italian coast guard has recovered approximately 30 bodies after a boat carrying migrants capsized in rough seas off the southern shore of the Italian mainland on Sunday.
When it ran into trouble early in the morning in the Ionian sea, the ship was transporting more than one hundred migrants, according to RAI, which cited unidentified port authorities near the coastal town of Crotone in Calabria, which is located at the toe of the Italian peninsula.
Approximately forty people were discovered to be alive by the middle of the morning, according to Luca Cari, a spokesperson for the firefighters who were assisting in the search and rescue efforts.
“At this time there are multiple victims,” he stated, though he did not provide an estimate of the number of people who had perished because search and recovery operations were still ongoing.
The number of bodies that have been recovered has been put at 27, and according to the Italian news service AGI, one of the victims was a baby that was only a few months old.
According to the radio report, rescue attempts included boats from the coast guard, border police, and fire departments.

The Coast Guard was not immediately accessible to provide any additional information.
There was no immediate information supplied in the reports regarding the nationalities of the migrants. [Citation needed] It was not immediately obvious where the boat had set sail from; however, the majority of boats carrying migrants that arrive in Calabria depart from the shores of Turkey or Egypt.
