In a 1988 road rage case, Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu will be released from Patiala’s central prison on Saturday after spending approximately 10 months there. PTI reported that several Congress leaders and supporters gathered outside the prison to give the 59-year-old former cricketer a spectacular welcome upon his release, chanting “Navjot Sidhu zindabad.”
The former state Congress chief was sentenced to one year of rigorous imprisonment by the Supreme Court for the 1988 road rage death of 65-year-old Gurnam Singh on May 20 of last year.
Sidhu’s attorney HPS Varma stated on Friday that the earlier release was due to Sidhu’s excellent behavior while incarcerated, as permitted by the rules.

Authorities informed Sidhu’s family of his parole from Patiala prison.
Outside the jail, his supporters arranged for ‘Dhol’ performers to welcome the former cricketer-turned-politician.
Saturday at his residence, Sidhu’s son Karan Sidhu told reporters that the family has been anxiously awaiting his release from prison. He stated that it had been a difficult period for the family, but they were relieved to see him leave jail.
To greet Navjot Sidhu, his supporters erected numerous posters and billboards throughout the city of Patiala. Sidhu’s release has party members jubilant, said one of his supporters outside the prison.
Former MLA and Congress leader Navtej Singh Cheema stated that the people of Punjab are awaiting Sidhu’s release from prison.
