Republican leader Nikki Haley, who is of Indian ancestry, boldly displayed her Indian roots in her first public appearance as a White House contender on Wednesday. She stated that as a brown girl growing up in a black-and-white world, she seen the “promise of America” unfold before her.
Nikki Haley, 51, is a former US ambassador to the UN and a two-term governor of South Carolina.
At a well-attended gathering in this South Carolina seaside community, Haley spoke to her devoted fans and said: “Because that’s what I’ve experienced my whole life, I’m more certain than ever that we can bring this vision to reality in our time. I saw the promise of America materialise in front of me as a brown girl growing up in a black-and-white environment.”
In her speech to formally announce her run for the presidency of the United States in 2024, Nikki Haley drew on her experience working at the UN and her history as the daughter of Indian immigrants to make the claim that “America is not a racist society.”
Ajit Singh Randhawa and Raj Kaur Randhawa, who were Sikhs who had immigrated from Punjab to Canada and later the US in the 1960s, gave birth to Nikki Haley as Nimrata Nikki Randhawa in Bamberg, South Carolina in 1972.
She was reared as a Sikh, but after marrying Michael Haley in 1996, she converted to Christianity.
“In terms of freedom and peace, I regard America as the international leader. This vision, though, is not simply mine. The centre of our country’s history, it beckoned to my parents more than 50 years ago. I am the proud child of immigrants from India “She said.
Nikki Haley remarked in reference to her upbringing in the United States, “In quest of a better life, my parents emigrated from India. They discovered it in 2,500-person Bamberg, South Carolina. Though it wasn’t always simple, our little village eventually learned to adore us. The only Indian family was us. Nobody was aware of our identity, nature, or purpose.”
Nikki Haley’s official announcement makes her the first candidate to enter the race to unseat her former employer Donald Trump, 76, who declared his third candidature for the White House late last year.

“But my parents were aware. They always emphasised to my siblings, brothers, and I the blessing it is to live in the United States, even on our hardest days. Both then and today, they were correct. My parents immigrated to a nation that was advancing and becoming more self-assured, “Added she.
