No Delhi Budget tomorrow as Centre demands explanation on ad expenditure

The Delhi Budget, which was scheduled to be tabled on Tuesday, has been put on hold by the Centre.

Monday, the chief minister of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal, alleged that the central government had obstructed the presentation of the Delhi budget to the assembly on Tuesday.

“You will be stunned to learn about something that has never occurred in India’s history. The Delhi government will propose its budget to the Assembly tomorrow. This evening, the Center has halted our budget. Tomorrow, government employees, physicians, and teachers in Delhi will not receive their salaries. It is hooliganism, Kejriwal told the News18 television channel.

The Delhi government and the Central government have been at odds over a number of issues, with the most recent being the arrest of former deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia in the Delhi excise policy case. The Aam Aadmi Party administration has claimed that the central government is pursuing a vendetta against Sisodia to detract from the Adani issue. The AAP leader will remain in judicial custody until April 3.

The Delhi government presented its economic survey to the assembly on Monday. During the fiscal year 2022-23, the national capital’s per capita income increased by 14.18 percent to 4,44,768 from 3,89,529 in the previous fiscal year. During the (provisional) fiscal year 2021-22, tax collections in Delhi increased by 36%, compared to a negative growth of 19.53 percent during the fiscal year 2020-21.
