London: In accordance with the desires of the late Queen Elizabeth II and her spouse Prince Philip, Britain’s King Charles III bestowed the title of Duke of Edinburgh on his younger brother, Prince Edward, on Friday.
Prince Philip, the last person to bear the title, had always wished Prince Edward to succeed him.
On his 59th birthday, King Charles bestowed the title on Prince Edward, who is now known as the Earl of Wessex.
Prince Edward has been given the Dukedom of Edinburgh, according to a declaration released by Buckingham Palace.
James, Prince Edward’s adolescent son, will not, however, receive the title. Instead, the 15-year-old will succeed the current Earl of Wessex.
The Duchess of Edinburgh will now be referred to as Sophie, the late wife of Prince Edward who was especially close to Queen Elizabeth and passed in September.
Later on Friday, the new duke and duchess will attend a gathering in Edinburgh to commemorate the start of the war in Ukraine.
Following the 1947 marriage of Prince Philip to the then-Princess Elizabeth, the dukedom was established for him.
Prince Philip, who passed away in April 2021, had preferred that Prince Edward take the throne, but Charles as Monarch eventually had to make the choice.
In regard to the two children of Prince Harry and his wife Meghan, Buckingham Palace also revised the roster of succession on its website earlier this week.

Prince Archie Mountbatten-Windsor and Princess Lilibet Mountbatten-Windsor are now identified as the offspring.
They were still mentioned on the website as plain “master” and “miss,” despite the fact that they were transformed into a prince and a princess when Harry’s father, King Charles, succeeded to the kingdom last year.
After Harry and Meghan left the royal life and relocated to California in 2020, the titles had become a controversial topic.
