Promised income for liking Instagram posts, Noida man loses Rs 9 lakh

The complainant said he made 12 payments to different IDs — of various amounts ranging from Rs 110 to Rs 1.50 lakh.

A resident of a high-rise community in Greater Noida West is accused of losing Rs 9 lakh in April after accepting a work-from-home job offer to like Instagram postings.

Based on the victim’s complaint, Mahagun Mywoods resident Chetan Prakash Tyagi, the cyber crime police station in Gautam Buddha Nagar filed a First Information Report (FIR) on Wednesday.

“On April 17, someone contacted me on WhatsApp and offered me the chance to earn extra money by liking and following them on Instagram. They won my faith by providing me with some payment screenshots. They also pointed me in the direction of a Telegram ID for a task. They requested my bank information in order to transfer the Rs 110 commission, the man protested.

They provided a link for me to create my ID and password on a bogus Bitcoin website, and they also provided me with a payment code, he continued. I was instructed to send Rs 5,000 to (another ID) on April 18; however, for whatever reason, the payment did not go through. I was then issued a different ID. I sent that ID 5,000 rupees. I was later admitted to a another Tele1gram group where I was repeatedly urged to pay before being kicked out of the group. I was duped out of Rs. 8.96 lakh in this way.

According to Section 66D of the Information Technology (Amendments) Act, 2008, the police reported a case of personation fraud against unidentified individuals.
