By Reena Bhardwaj At the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., youth leaders from the Kashmir valley discussed the development, peace, and prevalence of grassroots democracy in India’s Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
The International Center for Peace Studies invited valley residents Mir Junaid and Touseef Raina to a panel discussion titled “Kashmir: From Turmoil to Transformation.” The forum was centered on developments and the situation on the ground in Kashmir. Mir Junaid stated in his introductory remarks that Kashmir has been restored as a land of peace, prosperity, and advancement. Jammu and Kashmir has undergone numerous transitions from a protest state to a progressive union territory.”
“We must now look beyond the contentious rhetoric. The countries that are drumming on global platforms to deceive the world have nothing to do with the peace, progress, and prosperity of Kashmir. Accept that Kashmir is an existential dilemma for them, and that is why they want to keep the POT of violence burning in Kashmir,” Junaid asserted in a dig at Pakistan. He inquired about the plight of the so-called All-Party Hurriyat Conference (APHC) leaders in Jammu and Kashmir, who were once a formidable, well-coordinated separatist conglomerate. He inquired about the leaders’ rapid succession of setbacks.
The collapse of the Hurriyat Conference in Kashmir, as a result of Junaid’s statement that “they are facing the law of the land, the rule of the land,” was a consequence of the application of the law of the land. A smattering of protestors interrupted the Kashmiri activist and disrupted the forum at that precise moment. In response, a protester shouted, “Shame on you!” After being heckled by security personnel when asked to exit the room, the protestors became visibly irate and were observed hurling insults.
“Today, the entire audience has seen your true visage. What we have seen in Kashmir, we have seen in Washington today. Thank you for demonstrating the world how cruel and indecent these people are,” Junaid said in response to the interruption at National Press Club. This was all captured on camera, and the resulting video made headlines.
