This morning, President Droupadi Murmu made critical Constitutional nominations for twelve states, including Maharashtra. Additionally, the President named a new Lieutenant Governor for the Union Territory of Ladakh.
Former Jharkhand Governor Ramesh Bais will replace Bhagat Singh Koshyari as the Governor of Maharashtra. Last month, Koshyari, who is 80 years old, informed Prime Minister Narendra Modi of his desire to resign. “Governor Koshyari has indicated his wish to devote the remainder of his life to reading, writing, and other leisurely pursuits,” read a Raj Bhavan statement.
In 2019, Mr. Koshyari, a veteran of the RSS who has served as Chief Minister and as a member of both houses of Parliament, was appointed Governor. During his term, his numerous conflicts with the Uddhav Thackeray administration and his outspoken utterances frequently made news.
In fact, he provoked a controversy shortly after his appointment by presiding over an early morning oath ceremony for Devendra Fadnavis before Mr Thackeray and the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance of the Shiv Sena, Congress, and NCP could lay claim to forming the government.
Subsequently, the Uddhav Thackeray-led government and the Raj Bhavan clashed over several issues, including the reopening of temples following the Covid pandemic, the refusal of a state plane for Mr. Koshyari’s visit to Dehradun, and a special Assembly session following the rape and murder of a woman in Mumbai’s Sakinaka.
Mr. Koshyari stirred controversy in November of last year when he referred to Chhattrapati Shivaji as a “ancient icon.” The political opposition accused the Governor of insulting the Maratha chieftain, compelling senior BJP leaders to enter the fray.
Prior to it, he courted controversy by claiming that Maharashtra would be bankrupt if Gujaratis and Rajasthanis left.In addition to Maharashtra, the President has appointed governors for 10 other states and a lieutenant governor for Ladakh.
In Ladakh, a Union Territory established out of the former state of Jammu and Kashmir in 2019, Brigadier (Dr.) BD Mishra (Retd.) will assume the top office following the resignation of Radha Krishna Mathur. Mr. Mishra previously served as the Governor of Arunachal Pradesh, a critical strategic region similar to that of Ladakh.
The appointment comes amid rising calls for Ladakh to be granted statehood and a unique status. Environmental concerns have been expressed by regional leaders regarding the major infrastructure drive, and they have sought autonomy, which they claim will allow them to direct development in the way of their choosing.
Lt. General Kaiwalya Trivikram Parnaik (Retired) will assume the role of Governor of Arunachal Pradesh, Lakshman Prasad Acharya will assume the role of Governor of Sikkim, C P Radhakrishnan will assume the role of Governor of Jharkhand, and Shiv Prasad Shukla will assume the role of Governor of Himachal Pradesh.
