In a significant development for the Mumbai Ahmedabad High Speed Rail corridor, the second river bridge has been constructed successfully. According to Sushma Gaur, a spokesperson for the National High Speed Rail Corporation, the completion of this new viaduct over the Purna River is a significant step in the ambitious project.
The Purna river bridge, situated between the Bilimora and Surat bullet train stations, possesses remarkable characteristics that contribute to its structural strength and efficiency. It has a total length of 360 meters and is supported by nine 40-meter-long girders. The piers range in height from 10 to 20 meters, and circular piers with diameters of 4 and 5 meters are used in their construction.
During the construction of the Purna river bridge, one of the greatest obstacles was the river’s rising water level, which increased by 5 to 6 meters every two weeks during high tides. As stated by Sushma Gaur, the construction crew overcame this obstacle by continuously monitoring the high and low tides of the Arabian Sea to ensure safe and efficient progress.
Bullet Train Project Development from Mumbai to Ahmedabad
The completion of the second bridge, according to officials, represents a significant milestone in the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train initiative. This initiative intends to build 24 bridges along the entire corridor, 20 in Gujarat and 4 in Maharashtra. In the meantime, construction activities, including foundation work, pier construction, and other necessary infrastructure work, are ongoing in various Gujarat districts over rivers such as the Sabarmati, Mahi, Narmada, and Tapi.
Changing Transportation and Increasing Connectivity
Once concluded, the MAHSR corridor is anticipated to transform transportation between Mumbai and Ahmedabad, drastically reducing travel time and enhancing regional connectivity and economic growth. The completion of the second river bridge on the Purna River is evidence of the progress being made on this transformative infrastructure project.
