HOW TO IMPROVE SELF-ESTEEM

We often hear that having self-esteem is crucial, and we may agree, but that doesn’t mean it’s simple to achieve. Sometimes, when we attempt to believe in ourselves, clouds of self-doubt and even self-hatred form. Certainly, it is possible to feign confidence, but what is the secret to developing real self-esteem?

Your true essence is wonderful, pure, and ideal at this very moment. It does not matter what kind of person you are, what social class or categories you belong to, what gender or race you identify with, where you reside on the globe, or what your past consists of; this is true.

 

Of course, merely being informed that this is the case is insufficient. To develop self-esteem, you must be aware of the positive qualities you possess. And they are so plentiful! You possess wisdom, affection, and compassion to begin with. You possess knowledge, talents, and abilities. Some of these capabilities you are conscious of, some you take for granted, and others you are unaware of. You probably do not have an accurate perception of your true capabilities.

WHY IS IT HARD TO SEE OUR GOOD QUALITIES?

Our fundamental essence is indeed positive. The majority of the time, however, we are tossed about by waves of desire, craving, wrath, hubris, ignorance, and envy. “I’ve got to get a nicer apartment. I am in dire need of funds. My supervisor is unaware that I perform his duties better than he does. I do not know how to repair this relationship. It’s not fair that my closest friend always has a date and I’m still single!”

 

Buddhism refers to these strong emotions as “the five defilements” or “the five poisons.” They influence our behavior and cause unfathomable suffering, including relationship issues, depression, distress, lack of self-love, physical illness, and environmental issues.

DOESN’T THAT JUST PROVE I’M BAD?

Nope! No, not at all. It simply demonstrates that we are only acquainted with these toxins. Our minds grasp and retain these five defilements. We are incapable of accessing the deeper, more profound levels of our consciousness. Your psyche is comparable to a pristine lagoon. There are ripples and swells on the surface, but the water remains pristine beneath. The true nature of the mind is pristine and consists of awareness, authentic affection, and compassion. Toxins, or negative emotions, only exist on the surface. This is the Buddhist method of perceiving one’s true nature: seeing wisdom in the impurities.
