Sharingain Longkumer gets second term as Nagaland assembly speaker

Sharingain Longkumer first became a member of the Nagaland assembly in May 2019 when he won the by-election to the Aonglenden assembly seat

Sharingain Longkumer, a two-time Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) lawmaker, was unopposedly elected for a second consecutive term as the Nagaland assembly’s speaker on Monday.Sharingain Longkumer was first elected to the Nagaland assembly in May 2019 when he won a by-election for the Aonglenden constituency.

Monday, Pro-Tem Speaker Mhathung Yanthan announced that the assembly secretariat only received one nomination from Longkumer, the Aonglenden-based NDPP lawmaker. Minister of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Temjen Imna Along proposed his name.

Longkumar stated in his remarks that he will perform his duties “with diligence, dignity, and honor, and with the highest degree of efficiency, integrity, and impartiality, safeguarding the rich traditions, high standards, and dignity of this august House.”

In April 2019, during by-elections for the Aonglenden constituency, Longkumer, 41, was elected to the legislative assembly for the first time. According to the Nagaland assembly website, he assumed oath on May 28, 2019. He was initially elected as vice-speaker and succeeded Vikho-o Yhoshü as speaker upon his passing in February 2020.

In the recently concluded assembly elections, the parties headed by chief minister Neiphiu Rio’s NDPP and BJP won a clear majority of 37 (NDPP-25, BJP-12) of the state’s 60 seats (NDPP-25, BJP-12).

Longkumer began his education in Kohima, graduated from Lawrence School in Himachal Pradesh’s Sanawar in 2001, and earned his bachelor’s degree from Delhi University’s Hindu College in 2004. He received his LLB from the Faculty of Law at Delhi University in 2010.
