Congress member Shashi Tharoor stated that India’s position on the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict stemmed from pragmatic politics, but that India could have informed the Russian side of its position, as PM Modi did in Samarkand in front of the world’s cameras. Tharoor stated, “PM Modi said directly in front of the world’s cameras that the era is not for war, which is as clear a message… and Jaishankar in Moscow last November kept talking about the vital importance of peace and dialogue, asserting that India is in its own way pushing for a solution.” Watch Jaishankar’s “RRR” jab at British rule during the Raisina Dialogue, followed by Kevin Pietersen’s response.
I cannot speak for Jaishankar as I am a member of the opposition.
As Shashi Tharoor spoke in Raisina Dialogue on ‘Eastern Promise: The Power Shifts in EU Politics,’ he was asked to comment on Jaishankar’s remark that Europe believes its problems are the world’s problems, but the world’s problems are not Europe’s problems. “What stakes does India have? Consider the Ukraine conflict a regional conflict in Europe?” Thadoor was requested. Tharoor stated, “The comment was met with a great deal of approval in India and other nations…the war in Europe has had a very tangible, measurable impact on the rest of the world.” “When India’s border is violated with impunity, whether by our northern allies in China or by terrorists crossing the border from Pakistan, Europe acts as if it is India’s problem. Not much solidarity is demonstrated. However, when a European border is violated, the rest of the world is expected to express concern. I believe that was his main concern. I should not be speaking on his behalf, as I am a member of the opposition. However, he was making a point about double standards “Thaddeus stated.
