South Africa announced their squad for the upcoming white ball series against Australia. Young hitting prodigy Dewald Brevis has earned his first call-up to the national team after dazzling everyone with his striking prowess in domestic T20 competitions around the world. The batsman born in Johannesburg has been included in both the T20I and ODI squads for the series starting on August 30.
Donovan Ferreira and Matthew Breetzke are the other two uncapped hitters in the T20I squad. Gerald Coetzee, who has played Tests and ODIs for South Africa, has also been selected for his first T20I. Temba Bavuma and Rassie van der Dussen, who did not play in this year’s home T20I series against the West Indies, have also returned.
Left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj, who was recuperating from an Achilles injury he sustained in a Test against the West Indies earlier this year, also makes his return. The 33-year-old was anticipated to be out of the squad for the remainder of the year, but he has made remarkable strides and is now in contention for the 2023 World Cup.
Despite being named to the squad for the second and third T20Is, Maharaj will not be included in the playing XI until he demonstrates match fitness. Notably, South Africa will declare its initial World Cup squad on September 5, prior to the ODI series. However, this group is subject to change until September 27.
From August 24 both ODI and T20I squads will start training
The Proteas have not played international cricket since the conclusion of their World Cup Super League series against the Netherlands on April 2 of this year. The ODI squad will gather on August 21 for a three-day cohesion camp in Kruger National Park, and both squads will commence training on August 24.
A three-match T20I series between South Africa and Australia will commence on Wednesday, August 30, followed by a five-match ODI series beginning on Thursday, September 7.
