In Turkey and Syria, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake has caused severe harm. The latest estimates place the dead toll at approximately 2,600. However, it is anticipated that this number could surpass 10,000, as many people remain buried beneath the debris.
The earthquake has brought down enormous residential complexes and multistory buildings.
According to Reuters, this is the worst earthquake to strike Turkey in the 21st century, and the war in Syria has further exacerbated the suffering of millions of Syrians.
The death toll, which continues to rise, is already the biggest for any earthquake that has struck Turkey since 1999. Back then, a tremor of seven-plus magnitude had killed more than 17,000 people.
Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, as per Reuters, dubbed this a “historic calamity” and the greatest tremor to hit the country since 1939. As per the leader who is now preparing for a tough election in May, authorities are doing everything they possibly do.
Although the winter season, chilly weather, and the nighttime earthquake make things more difficult, everyone is putting out their greatest effort.
Syria has requested assistance from the international world.
A statement by the Syrian foreign ministry appealed to “member states of the United Nations… the International Committee of the Red Cross and other humanitarian” agencies to support “efforts to tackle the terrible earthquake”
The community has also massively rushed to the aid of disaster-stricken nations. According to Reuters, Russian rescue teams have travelled to the two countries.
