Benefits of Meditation That Will Change Your Life. There are numerous benefits of meditation, regardless of whether you prefer to sit in Lotus position for two hours or simply concentrate on your breath for ten minutes each morning.

The most intriguing aspect of these benefits is how meditation specifically affects the brain.

Let’s be honest. Meditation is difficult! Initially, it appears simple: simply close your eyes and breathe. Yes, but there is much more to meditation than that. There are numerous ways to meditate, such as counting breaths, repeating mantras, or simply observing thoughts without attachment or judgement.

Mindfulness meditation is an effective technique for novices because it provides the practitioner with specific objects of attention. You practise mindfulness by becoming entirely aware of your environment, such as the way the wind feels against your skin and the sensation of walking barefoot on a cold floor.

Meditation on mindfulness can be practiced anywhere, at any time, and it enhances your experience of the present moment. This is an effective method to remain present, tranquil, and capable of handling any challenges that arise. Here are Five Benefits of Meditation That Will Change Your Life.

Five Benefits of Meditation That Will Change Your Life:

Meditation is like a breath of fresh air for the mind, as anyone who practises it regularly can attest. We are aware that meditation feels good, but what are its actual benefits and how does it affect the brain specifically? Read on to find out more!

1. Greater Sense of Self-Awareness

Meditation enables us to conduct an internal mental inventory of our bodies. How does our physical organism feel in the present? What incredible abilities does our body possess? Do we feel robust or weak? What can we do to alleviate any pains in our bodies?

Meditation, like the physical practise of yoga, strengthens the connection between the mind and body. Through this increased self-awareness, we cultivate present-moment awareness, which enables us to remain present, grounded, and focused in all aspects of our lives and in every moment.

2. Reduce Stress and Anxiety

Obsessing over the past or the future frequently results in misery. When we are completely immersed in the present, we experience contentment. We can only control what is occurring in the present, so there is no reason to dwell on the past or the future.

Our lives are always in the present. Meditation is the anchor that allows you to remain present. This is the key to reducing stress, obtaining control over anxiety, and leading a happier, stress-free existence.

3. Increase Mental Clarity and Focus

We are completely engaged in the present action if we are mindful and intent on the present moment. Imagine how much better your work would be if you were completely focused on it, rather than being distracted by mental chatter or monitoring your phone or social media every five minutes.

Meditation enables us to disconnect and tune in to what lies beneath the surface of our thoughts. Your memory and mental acuity will also improve as this becomes a subconscious habit resulting in enhanced mental clarity and focus.

4. Emotional Intelligence

When we have uninterrupted time to meditate, we are better able to connect with our emotions. We may recognise the source of our unease or anxiety. Regular meditation not only enables us to recognise our emotions as fleeting, but also to remain with them without avoiding or being afraid of confronting them.

By being able to remain with your thoughts, you can work through your emotions instead of ignoring or repressing them. As a result, you increase your emotional intelligence and your ability to recognise and resolve emotional issues as they arise, which has positive effects on your relationships and mental state.

5. Trigger the Brain’s Relaxation Response

Herbert Benson, the founder of the Mind-Body Medical Institute, asserts that meditation activates the brain’s “relaxation response.” Components of this response include alterations in heart rate, metabolism, and brain chemistry, all for the purpose of bringing you and your brain to a state of heightened relaxation.

Sounds amazing, doesn’t it?! It is! And this relaxation can contribute to improved sleep, the ability to fall asleep faster, stress management, less anxiety, and a greater capacity to maintain emotional equilibrium.

The Benefits of Meditation Improve Your Daily Life

Meditation is a practise, and with that practise come tremendous mental and physical health benefits. Some days it is simple to calm the mind, while other days it is difficult. Know that regardless of the outcome of each meditation session, you are doing yourself a world of good.

Meditation is a powerful practise that teaches perseverance, self-assurance, resilience, and consciousness. Even closing your eyes and inhaling and exhaling deeply constitutes a form of meditation. Try taking a few deep breaths in and out the next time you feel anxious, knowing that you are receiving the benefits of meditation.

Prepare to be a less anxious, more self-aware, and more relaxed version of yourself as a result of your meditation practise!

Follow the 12 Simple Steps for Beginners of Starting Meditation

Are you a novice meditator?

Wondering how to meditate effectively in order to reap all of its benefits? You may be an experienced meditator or someone who has previously attempted meditation (but given up in frustration). If so, you may be interested in how to enhance your practice, get back on track, or appreciate even deeper levels of this potent practice. The results of learning how to meditate effectively and practicing it routinely can be life-changing. It is common to experience a sense of mental and emotional tranquility. Or perhaps you desire a better night’s sleep, reduced tension, and enhanced health. Meditation has also been shown to reduce blood pressure, glucose, and cholesterol levels. Whatever your needs, we can assist you. Our 12 Simple Steps for Beginners of Starting Meditation will help you get started.

12 Simple Steps for Beginners of Starting Meditation:

1. How long should I meditate?

If this is your initial inquiry, you are not alone. People also inquire, “Is ten minutes per day enough?” “Is an hour too long?” Depending on who you ask, the responses could vary. Some systems recommend meditating for 20 minutes twice a day, while others insist it is best to meditate for an hour every morning, or to schedule two sessions of half an hour each, one when you awaken and one when you go to bed. The duration of your meditation session is up to you. It depends partially on your lifestyle and partly on your tolerance for staying still, which (I guarantee) will increase with practice. Through trial and error, you will discover what works best for you. If you are a beginner, proceed slowly. Even five minutes per day is an excellent starting point. Set a timer if necessary. As meditation becomes more comfortable, increase the duration.

2. This key choice helps ensure long term success

Set aside time each day for your daily practice. The same time each day is beneficial. If that is not possible, choose times that accommodate your schedule and responsibilities. Set yourself reminders until regular meditation becomes a habit like cleansing your teeth or consuming meals. You will derive the most benefit from your practice if you meditate daily or on a regular basis. Consistency is the key to success.

3. Create a meditation corner

A meditation corner is any space where you can sit comfortably, free frominterruptions, for the duration of your meditation. It could be a spare room, an actual corner of a bedroom or study a sun porch or anywhere that promotes peace and quiet. Make it a space you like. One that calls to you when it’s time to meditate. You may want to keep objects there that convey a sense of peace, inspiration or comfort. Incense or an essential oil diffuser are possible good additions, as are banners or posters with inspirational sayings or images. However you design your meditation corner, make sure it is a place you love to visit.

4. Don’t forget about this critical element

Wear comfortable clothes and sit in a position that works for your body. If you enjoy sitting cross legged (or in a lotus position) on the floor go for it. But

you’ll get all the same benefits sitting in a chair.

Choose a location that allows you to sit upright with your back supported as necessary. Don’t worry if your erect spine sags or your head lowers as you meditate. That is normal.

5. What’s the best way to start meditating properly?

Sit comfortably. Then watch your breath as you do several rounds of the following:

Breathe in for six counts, hold your breath for another two counts, breathe out for four counts and hold for four.

After a few rounds of breath work notice how much calmer you feel.

6. Settle in and enjoy

After the intro breath work, relax and breathe normally with your eyes closed.

Sit quietly.

There’s nothing else to do during this time.

If you feel impatient, or wonder what time it is, open your eyes and look (briefly) at a watch or clock.

Then close your eyes and keep meditating.

7. Your mind is active. Now what?

If your mind is active, give it something positive to grab on to.

Like your breath.

Notice it coming in, then going out, following no particular pattern. You are relaxed and at ease, just being.

There is nothing to do and nowhere to go. As you breathe in say to yourself: “I breathe in,” and as you breathe out say to yourself, “I breathe out.”

Continue until you feel your thoughts ease and your mind become clearer and calmer.

8. This could work even better.

Repeat a positive statement (affirmation) to yourself. Start by saying “here and now in this moment” followed by something like: “I am peaceful,” “I am calm,” “I love myself,” “I love my life.”

For greater effect, flow positive emotions while you say your affirmations.

Be sure your affirmations are positive. Never state what you aren’t, as in “I’m no longer broke.” Instead: “My life is full of abundance.”

Or give this a try.

When you breathe in say to yourself: “I accept myself.” When you breathe out say: “I release what doesn’t serve me. All is well.”

Continue until your mind settles. If it doesn’t, that’s OK. After all, thinking is what minds do.

If you like affirmations, our Synch Up soundtracks, a series of powerful affirmations to support your meditation practice and your life, are for you.

The one entitled Inner Peace is specifically designed to calm your mind.

9. Focus on the (musical) notes

If you meditate using Synchronicity High-Tech Meditation and you feel anxious or your mind is active, focus on the music, one note at a time.

Sound tracks are available that promote alpha brain waves for a light meditation, or theta waves for a deeper experience.

Delta brain wave technology is also available for serious meditators.

If your mind wanders, gently return your attention back to the music. Listen for each note.

10. Remember this above all

Be patient.

If you have an active mind you’re normal. Bring your focus back to the music or to your breath, or a positive affirmation.

Remember, there is no wrong way to meditate.

Relax and be OK with whatever experience is happening in the moment.

11. Always end this way

Complete your meditation with an intention of love.

Imagine, for instance, moving peacefully throughout the day and experiencing a tranquil evening before falling asleep soundly at night.

Or, resolve to appreciate your workday by unwinding during lunch and engaging in a favored pastime at the end of the day.

Send your positive intention out into the world, whatever it may be.

12. Open your eyes

Allow yourself a few minutes after the conclusion of your meditation to ease back into the day. Then you should open your eyes and praise yourself on the back.

Congratulations! You just meditated.

Health Benefits of Meditation: Meditation may help if you’re apprehensive, stiff, and concerned about stress. Even a few minutes of meditation can help restore your calm and inner tranquility, which is beneficial for both your emotional and physical health. Meditation is easy, inexpensive, does not require special apparatus, and anyone can practice it.

Finding time throughout the day to meditate, whether for five or twenty minutes, can help you feel happier and more at ease, and your mind and body will appreciate it. We’ve listed a few of the many Health Benefits of Meditation below.

Health Benefits of Meditation
• You can deal with stress better
Meditation promotes mental and physical tranquility, which reduces tension. When it relaxes and lets go, the body follows the mind. Our adrenaline and nervous systems require periodic unplugging, recycling, and rejuvenation.

• It relieves anxiety
Meditation is widely regarded as the most effective portable treatment for anxiety. Simply closing your eyes and performing breathing exercises for a few minutes can turn off the mechanisms in your brain that cause anxiety. It allows you to de-stress by simply relaxing and remaining composed under duress. By reducing your blood pressure and tension levels, mindfulness can help you feel more relaxed.

• It helps reduce the symptoms of depression
Frequently provoked by tension and anxiety, depression is a group of mental health conditions. According to research, meditation can alter depression-related brain regions, such as the’me centre’ and ‘anxiety centre.’

• Your brain can be retrained
The brain grows as it is used. Meditation retrains the brain to use the prefrontal cortex, or’me centre,’ to modulate the ‘fear centre,’ according to studies. As a result, when we are not meditating and are confronted with a stressor, our prefrontal cortex will direct our minds to consider more calmly and clearly, as opposed to reacting impulsively.

• It is beneficial to your heart
The risk of cardiovascular disease has been shown to be reduced by meditation in studies. Meditation lowers overall cardiovascular mortality, cardiac muscle efficacy, and blood pressure.

• It reduces blood pressure
High blood pressure is a global epidemic that increases the risk of stroke and heart attack and affects adults. According to research, meditation can reduce blood pressure naturally and without medication.

• It promotes inner strength
We have all wished we could escape from traffic or a tedious meeting. Practicing meditation and mindfulness helps develop inner strength and endurance to patiently endure these situations because it creates the capacity to be in the present moment regardless of the circumstances; we are simply able to be with challenging things without unraveling or allowing them to affect us.

• Anger management
It is normal to feel anger when confronting challenging individuals or situations. When you meditate, you train your brain to focus on the present, which enables you to learn how to control and process your emotions in the present moment. Perhaps you’re upset, but if you calm down and simply experience your emotions, focusing on your breath will generate a sense of mental relief.

• Pain management
As a result of the activation of brain regions associated with pain processing by meditation, mindful respiration can aid in the management of chronic pain. According to research, even a brief period of meditation can increase pain tolerance and decrease pain-related anxiety, thereby potentially reducing the need for opioid pain medications.

• Meditation protects against burnout
As we work longer hours and take on more responsibilities, it is simple to experience burnout. According to research, mindfulness-based stress reduction may reduce the portion of the brain responsible for anxiety and fear, while strengthening the prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for personality development.

A Take-Home Message
Modern research and personal experience demonstrate that meditation is beneficial for achieving life objectives, with some even referring to it as “food for the soul” and claiming that it can open doors to a better existence. Even if you only have a few minutes per day, why not attempt a form of meditation that suits your goals? It’s a wonderful way to enhance your quality of life.

How to start meditation if you’re feeling too stressed in your life

1. Choose a peaceful environment

Always remember that meditation should be practiced in a tranquil environment if you’re just beginning. Then, you would be able to thoroughly concentrate on it and avoid external stimuli and distractions. Be in a location that is at least free of distractions for the duration of your meditation. Also, ensure that televisions, phones, and other noise electronics are turned off.

2. Wear comfortable clothes

When learning how to meditate, it is essential to realize that the purpose of the practice is to quiet the mind and block out external distractions. That cannot be accomplished if you are experiencing discomfort due to restrictive apparel. Therefore, lax clothing should be worn during meditation practice, and shoes should be removed.

3. Decide how long you want to meditate

Before beginning meditation, determine how long you will meditate. If you are a novice, you can commence with a 5-minute session once per day. Don’t just give up; continue attempting until you achieve the desired results.

4. Do some stretches before you start

Since meditation involves extended periods of remaining still, light stretching can help prepare the body and mind for meditation. It will also prevent you from losing your concentration during meditation. For a productive session, extend your neck, shoulders, and lower back.

5. Sit in a comfortable position

Ensure that you are comfortable while meditating. Traditionally, it is practiced by resting in the lotus or half-lotus position on a cushion on the ground. If your legs, pelvis, and lower back lack flexibility, this position may be uncomfortable. Sit in a balanced, upright, and straight position, with or without your thighs crossed.

How to Start a Meditation Practice: As modern life becomes increasingly dependent on nonstop information streams from our mobile devices and constant stimulation becomes the norm, people desire a way to disconnect and rest their minds. Meditation is one method to accomplish this.

This article discusses what meditation is, how to start a meditation practice, potential obstacles you may encounter while meditating (and how to surmount them), and the numerous benefits meditation provides.

What Is Meditation?

Let’s define meditation as paying attention to the fluctuations of your mind for our purposes. The majority of the time, we are entirely identified with our own thoughts, such that there is no distinction between the thoughts and the thinker. Meditation begins to erode this connection.

There are many different methods of meditation, but three basic ones are:

Focusing on breath: This technique is based in Buddhist tradition. By focusing on your breath, you’re turning your attention away from fixating on any one particular thought. Some people find it helpful to count each inhale and exhale.

Observing thoughts: A common misconception about meditation is that you’re supposed to clear your mind of thoughts. In reality, you’ll still have thoughts arise, but this technique allows you to distance yourself from them. Say you think about a huge project due at work while meditating. Instead of holding onto this thought, and following it up with others like, “I’m worried I won’t submit it on time,” you notice the thought, label it, and let it pass without becoming reactive.

Body scanning: Body scanning is a method of shifting your focus from your thoughts to your body. You place all of your focus on one specific part of your body, and usually shift your attention to different parts of the body. For instance, you might start at the top of your head and slowly work your way down to your face, neck, shoulders, and so on, until you reach the tips of your toes.

Being kind to yourself and having patience as you meditate is an important part of the practice.

How to Start a Meditation Practice

You don’t need much to get started with meditation—as long as you set aside some time during your day and have a willingness to learn, you’re well on your way to creating your own unique practice.

1. Designate a Time

Many individuals prefer to meditate first thing in the morning, but if a different time of day works better for you, do so. It is optimal to meditate at the same time every day; however, be forgiving if you are unable to do so. Meditation is an act of self-care at any time.

Your meditation practice need not be protracted, particularly when you are just beginning. Ten to fifteen minutes is an appropriate starting point.

If you practice yoga regularly at home, you can try incorporating meditation at the end.

If you find it difficult to focus on the respiration for ten minutes, begin with five minutes. Before extending the duration, focus on those five minutes. When ready, start by adding one minute to your sitting time. Gradually work your way up.

You will need a timer that will alert you at the conclusion of your meditation session so that you are not continually monitoring the time. Put your phone on vibrate so that you are not tempted to interrupt your meditation if it chimes.

If you use meditation apps, you won’t need to set a timer because most applications will automatically tally you in and out of the practice.

Create the Space

In addition to selecting a time for practice, you must also locate a location. It does not need to be large or decorated in any particular manner, but it should be away from domestic distractions. Perfect would be a corner of your bedroom or living room. If you wish to play meditation music (there are numerous complimentary recordings available online), you may do so now.

Warm Up

Especially if you are going to meditate first thing in the morning, you may want to perform a brief yoga warm-up sequence before seated. If you discover that you do not need to limber up, that is also acceptable.

Find a Comfortable Position

If you can recline on the floor, you should bring blankets or a cushion. You may choose to purchase a meditation cushion, known as a zafu, but it is not required. Try a position with crossed legs, such as sukasana. While you may observe others meditating in the lotus position, it may not be a safe or comfortable position to maintain for extended periods.

If you cannot lie on the floor, that is also acceptable. Find a chair that allows you to sit upright with both feet level on the floor.

5. Position Your Hands

You may have seen photographs of individuals meditating with their hands in various mudras. You may attempt any position you have observed, or you may simply rest your hands in your lap. Optionally, the hands can be placed on the knees with the palms facing up or down. Find a position in which you are comfortable.

6. Focus On Your Breath

Close your eyes and resume your seat. Start observing your respiration without altering it. The tendency is to deepen your respiration as soon as you become aware of it. Refuse this impulse.

Concentrate on your inhales and exhales, perhaps focusing on the sensation of air entering and leaving your nostrils. If counting your respiration helps you maintain focus, you can do so. Try visualizing your intrusive thoughts floating away before returning your focus to your breathing.

End Your Practice

Open your eyes when your timer goes off. Take a moment after your practice to reflect on how you feel. Move gingerly to your hands and knees if you feel rigid after sitting. Stretching (such as the downward-facing dog) can help you limber up.
