On Monday, three tremors exceeding a magnitude of four struck western Nepal’s Jajarkot. At least sixteen people were injured as a result. “On Monday afternoon, three aftershocks of magnitude four or greater struck Jajarkot in western Nepal, injuring sixteen individuals. “Six others were injured in Jajarkot, while ten were injured in Rukum West,” security agency representatives reported.

A tremor of magnitude 6.4 struck Nepal shortly before midnight on the previous Friday. The nation has since experienced a number of aftershocks.

According to officials, the quake that struck the Jajarkot and Rukum West districts in western Nepal also damaged approximately 8,000 dwellings, both public and private.

Saurya Kiran Sharma, the press coordinator for Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal “Prachanda,” reported that an all-party meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday to debate the latest developments and the aftermath of the Jajarkot earthquake.

The summit will focus primarily on issues pertaining to the rebuilding and relief efforts that will be undertaken in the aftermath of the earthquake.

President Ramchandra Paudel will depart Kathmandu on Tuesday afternoon for an inspection tour of Jajarkot and Rukum Paschim, two districts severely affected by the earthquake.

“A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck west Nepal. Approximately 200 kilometers southeast of Joshimath. This is at a shallow depth, so strong tremors have been felt throughout northern India, according to NCS office director JL Gautam.

“A vast area is likely to experience tremors when the depth is great but the magnitude is relatively low. However, the converse is also true, as is the case here, where the depth is shallow but the magnitude is so great that vibrations were felt. It lasted between ten and fifteen seconds,” explained Gautam.

“There are numerous faults in the Himalayas. It is a tectonically active region. “We are investigating which errors are involved,” Gautam said.

According to NCS data, the 6.2-magnitude quake was preceded by a 4.6-magnitude quake at 2.25 p.m. and followed by two additional aftershocks at 3.06 p.m. (3.6 magnitude) and 3.19 p.m. (3.1 magnitude).

The Himalayan region, seismically one of the most active continental regions, experienced at least four magnitude 8 earthquakes during an active phase from 1897 to 1952, according to a paper titled “Himalayan Earthquakes and Developing an Earthquake Resilient Society” published in Journal of Geological Society of India in 2020.

The region is currently in a seismic quiescence phase, and sufficient strains have accumulated, but it is still difficult to predict when and where the next major earthquake will occur.

Overnight, the Seismological Center in Surkhet District in the Western region of Nepal recorded two earthquakes of magnitudes 4.8 and 5.9 with an epicenter in Dahakot, Bajura.

“An earthquake measuring 4.9 magnitude occurred at 11:58 PM (local time), and another measuring 5.9 magnitude was recorded at 1:30 AM ,” Rajesh Sharma, an official at the Seismological Center in Surkhet District of Nepal, told media over the phone.

According to the District Police Office Bajura, residents had to flee their homes when the earthquake shook the ground. In addition to the neighboring districts of Bajura in Western Nepal, the trembling of the earth was also felt in the neighboring districts.

District Police Office Bajura verified, “We are assessing the earthquake’s impact.”

In recent months, earthquakes have been recorded in the Western region of Nepal, which had been stable for a long time. Earlier, the earthquake in the region had killed six individuals.
