On July 8, members of the Indian community in Toronto, Canada, displayed the national flag in opposition to a pro-Khalistan demonstration. To send a clear message to separatist elements, members of the Indian community held a counter-demonstration and unfurled the Indian tricolor in front of the consulate, where Khalistan supporters were displaying their flags. This comes days after posters featuring Indian diplomats in Canada and London proclaiming a July 8 pro-Khalistan rally surfaced on social media.

Saturday’s pro-Khalistan demonstration outside the Indian High Commission in London was relatively subdued and incident-free. The duration of the demonstration, which occurred between 12:30 and 2:30 GMT, was shorter than anticipated. In stark contrast to earlier protests held at the same location this year, only a handful of individuals defied the rain to attend the demonstration.

The demonstration was part of a series of protests held in cities around the globe, including Melbourne, San Francisco, and Toronto, to condemn the murder of Khalistani activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia on June 18. In India, Nijjar was sought on terrorism charges.

The Hindu reported that protesters in London displayed banners depicting India’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom and its Consul General in Birmingham, accusing them of being responsible for Nijjar’s murder. Recently, similar posters depicting the leaders of various Indian missions around the world circulated on social media platforms.

In addition to pro-Khalistan banners, there were also Pakistan and Kashmir support posters among the demonstrators on Saturday, according to the report. These posters highlighted the larger geopolitical dynamics at play within the protest.

In the meantime, India demanded on Friday that the British government immediately deport or prosecute the Khalistani elements in their country, as the “individual targeting” of Indian diplomats has become a major source of concern for New Delhi. During a meeting in New Delhi, National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval and his British counterpart Tim Barrow discussed the issue at length.

“The two parties agreed to increase cooperation in the fight against violent extremism and radicalism. In a democracy, violent extremism and radicalization cannot be justified, an official source told media.

The source added, “The Indian side raised the issue of extremist elements in the UK threatening individual officers of the Indian High Commission and urged the UK Government to take strong public action against these extremist elements, such as deportation or legal prosecution.”

Pakistan and China are likely to participate virtually in the SCO-NSA meeting. According to the media, National Security Adviser Ajit Doval will deliver the introductory remarks at today’s SCO-NSA meeting.

While the SCO summit is scheduled to take place in Goa this summer, India will host a number of events in the lead-up. Notably, the next significant SCO meeting will be the defense ministers’ meeting, scheduled for April 27-29 in Delhi.

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is an intergovernmental organization founded in 2001, with eight member states: India, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.

Important details about the SCO-NSA meeting

1) Nikolai Patrushev, secretary of the Russian Federation’s Security Council, will attend the annual meeting of the secretaries of security councils of SCO member states on Wednesday in New Delhi, according to a statement by the Russian Security Council, as confirmed by a Russian embassy official.

2) The SCO is a significant regional powerhouse that was founded more than two decades ago to foster economic, political, and military cooperation among its member states. The eight SCO members account for approximately 42% of the world’s population and 25% of the global GDP.

3) On June 9, 2017, India became a member in good standing of the SCO. Afghanistan, Belarus, Iran, and Mongolia are Observer States, while Armenia, Azerbaijan, Cambodia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Turkey are dialogue partners.

4) Earlier this month, Pakistan witnessed the meeting of heads of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Tourism administrations in Kashi.

5) Kazakhstan’s Vice Minister of Culture and Sports Yerzhan Yerkinbayev, China’s Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism Lu Ying Chuan, Kyrgyzstan’s Deputy Minister of Culture, Information, Sports and Youth Policy Samat Bekturovich Shatmanov and Uzbekistan’s First Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism Azamov Ulugbek Axmatovich in person attended the meeting of heads of the SCO tourism administrations held in Kashi.

6) Vladimir Evgenyevich Ilyichev, Deputy Minister of the Russian Ministry of Economic Development, Muminzod Kamoliddin, Chairman of Tajikistan’s Tourism Development Committee, and Aun Chaudhry, Advisor to the Pakistani Prime Minister on Tourism and Sports, participated virtually in the SCO meeting held in Kashi earlier this month.

National security advisor Ajit Doval will meet his UK counterpart Tim Barrow today in London for the annual strategic dialogue against the backdrop of the British State broadcaster BBC attempting to resurrect the 2002 Gujarat riots and target Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the United Kingdom becoming the epicentre of the so-called Khalistan movement and the Pakistan-sponsored movement to keep the Kashmir issue alive.

On his way back from a positive conversation with his American counterpart Jake Sullivan in Washington, NSA Doval will meet with Barrow in London to discuss the state of bilateral relations, the global strategic environment with the Ukraine conflict in the spotlight, and the Indo-Pacific. The two NSAs will likely discuss terrorism emanating from the Af-Pak region and the situation in the Middle East as a whole.

While India and the United Kingdom are working towards signing a free trade agreement this year, the British deep state is proving to be a significant obstacle to bilateral relations, as it resents the fact that a former colony of the British empire has surpassed the UK in terms of economy and global influence. According to the IMF, India is the largest economy with the fastest growth rate, and Britain is the weakest link among the G-7 economies.

The core of Whitehall is in conflict with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and is working in conflicting directions on the Indian subcontinent. Today, India and the United Kingdom disagree on Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, with London acting as a big brother in the Indian subcontinent with a soft spot for Pakistan.

NSA  Ajit Doval is anticipated to bring up UK-based violent extremism in the context of Sikh radical groups operating from the island nation, in addition to Pakistani Islamist groups hostile to India on Kashmir and the Citizenship Amendment Act. Despite India’s highest intelligence levels raising the issue of Sikh separatism in Britain, the UK government has done little to stop the funding of so-called Khalistan terrorism via radical gurudwaras in Britain in the name of fabricated atrocities against the community in India. According to the Modi administration, the United Kingdom is attempting to justify violence in the name of free speech and is using radicals as a pressure point against India.

The fact that Britain provides economic offenders such as Nirav Modi, Vijay Mallya, and Sanjeev Bhandari with refuge/safe haven is another source of discontent for the Modi government. Even though India and the United Kingdom have an extradition treaty, not a single economic offender has been returned to India due to the courts and the Whitehall passing the buck.

Despite India and Pakistan achieving independence from Britain’s imperial rule 75 years ago, London still carries the imperial legacy on its shoulders and enjoys political meddling in the Indian subcontinent. It provides refuge to BNP activists opposed to Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh, former Pakistani prime minister Nawaz Sharif, and MQM’s Altaf Hussain in Britain, as well as Sikh separatists opposed to India. It is now common knowledge that Britain and the Pakistani deep state handed Afghanistan over to the Taliban on August 15, 2021 and threw the entire minority population, including women and children, under the bus.

India is also displeased that, under the direction of the UK foreign office, the BBC was permitted to polarise Indians along communal lines by attempting to reopen the 2002 Gujarat Riots despite the Indian Supreme Court’s exoneration of Prime Minister Modi. Clearly, the conversation between NSA Doval and NSA Barrow will be professional and businesslike, with the UK required to make amends if it wishes to conduct business with India.
