There is a delicate balance between being faithful and being idiotic, according to a friend of mine. Why then is there a distinction? Faith, in my view, is moving forward with a change even when the outcome is unclear. And it’s ridiculous to expect your life to improve when you don’t even try to alter anything.

In my opinion, there are five pitfalls that no guy can afford to fall into if he wants to be a loyal man and not an idiot. Despite my moniker as “The Foolish Five,” we are all naive enough to fall for their traps. I will explain.

The first is pride.

This is the pitfall of thinking we can get along without other people’s assistance. We think we’re capable of handling everything on our own. “I got this” is a common expression among us. “I am already aware of that.” “It is my decision if it is to be.” In reality, a man’s strength is directly proportional to the quantity of stronger guys he associates with; if you disagree, just ask a weight lifter.

The second trap is the commitment trap, or should I say the lack of commitment.

We fall into this pitfall when we stop trying and quit when things become difficult or don’t meet our expectations. It can be something small, but more often than not it’s something major, like giving up on our marriage, our relationship with a parent from whom we’ve grown apart, or our goals.

The third trap is ignorance.

On the surface, ignorance does not necessarily constitute a bad thing; yet, there is a distinction between knowing nothing and understanding exactly what one does not know. “Unconscious incompetence” is what I mean here. Avoid falling into this trap by being honest about your ignorance and asking clarifying questions instead of acting as though you know something when you don’t. “The only dumb question is the one you don’t ask; because if you don’t ask, you’re still dumb because you still don’t know.” I tell my students this all the time.

The fourth man trap is laziness.

When we’re ignorant, we either don’t know or act as if we do, but when we’re lazy, we ignore our knowledge and do nothing because “I just don’t feel like it.” Refusing to get up and move about is what it is. Doing nothing until one “feels like it” is a surefire recipe for failure. One wise man told me, “Do what you have to do, so you can eventually do what you want to do.” That was Denzel Washington, an Oscar-winning actor.

And finally, the last trap is the apathy trap.

The “I don’t care” mentality is apathy in action. It happens when we fail to prioritize our own needs to the point where we seek counseling to address past hurts, fail to honor our wives and understand their hearts, neglect our children, spend too much time playing video games or watching sports, or watch pornographic media.

Attempts at risk-taking in life don’t always succeed. Lauren and I truly mulled over our alternatives when I was ready to depart the Steelers in 1988. Two coaches who went on to become Hall of Famers—Bill Parcels of the Giants and Bill Walsh of the 49ers—offered me jobs in the same offseason. Marty Schottenheimer in Kansas City and Sam Wyche in Cincinnati were also great interviewees. Each of the four men was an excellent coach and a nice person. I was familiar with both Bill Walsh and Sam Wyche from my time in San Francisco as coaches, so I felt at ease with any of them. It was every defensive coach’s fantasy to sit in a room and discuss football philosophy with Bill Parcels, Bill Belichick, and Romeo Crennel, especially since Bill had just won his first Super Bowl.

Unfortunately, Lauren and I were planning to raise a family at the time, and we felt that navigating the complexities of both New York and San Francisco would be too much. Because the position in Cincinnati was not extended to me, we were forced to hire Marty Schottenheimer in Kansas City. What I learned and the reasons it failed are these.

There is no safe path.

Kansas City has an excellent standard of living and would have been an ideal location to establish a family. My reasons for wanting to leave the Chiefs after three years were less related to my work with the team and more personal. Both the 49ers and the Giants had already won Super Bowls by this point. There is no easy way through life; I might have easily second-guessed my decision. The finest information we have allows us to make decisions, yet sometimes it feels like we’re still in the dark.

Discern and make your decision.

My takeaway is to get all the facts you can right now, talk to God about it, make a choice, and then move on. Though I do try to avoid making the same mistakes twice, I never go back and regret a decision I’ve already made. It produces no results. Despite our loss in the Super Bowl, I still benefit greatly from the experiences I had and the connections I made in Kansas City.

Learn, but don’t second guess.

If you can’t turn back the clock on previous choices, it’s better to ride it out, take it easy, and make the most of your current situation. While some of your choices will turn out well, others will backfire spectacularly. The fact that no team can win every game is a valuable lesson I picked up from sports. And it’s possible to win championships while suffering setbacks. We won in my book nonetheless since we left the safety net behind and are now playing the game of life to the fullest.

Stand on your convictions.

People will question your choices from time to time, particularly if they disagree with your worldview. A lot of people think that you should always take a promotion when offered one, regardless of whether it’s for financial or social reasons. Some may accuse you of being irresponsible if you are a father who refuses a promotion or resigns from your job due to your lack of involvement at home or the fact that you live in an unsuitable area for raising children. Ignore what they say. Stand firm in your beliefs. Stand out.

Can I trust you? A good leader has many attributes, one of which is trustworthiness. Being trustworthy requires a certain set of qualities. Our character is built on a foundation of trustworthy attributes, which are internal qualities. These characteristics are inherent to our identity and will always be present, no matter what. I have simplified things by identifying four main characteristics of a trustworthy person:

1. Competence

Having a clear goal and purpose in mind is essential for achieving success in any effort. In other words, we shouldn’t expect to know everything, but we should be well-equipped to handle whatever comes our way. If our subordinates do not believe we are competent to lead, they will not stay under our wing. They trust us to lead them wisely, not because they think we’ll never make a bad choice.

Every leader needs the ability to articulate the reasoning behind their decisions, whether it’s the relative merits of several courses of action, the suitability of their marketing and sales tactics to the products they are peddling, the specifics of their training routine, or the anticipated effectiveness of a certain play against the opposing defense. Never mind if we don’t know everything; what matters is that those we lead have faith in our abilities to guide them toward realizing the organization’s goals.

2. Integrity

Honesty is essential for a leader to succeed, if not the most important factor. Particularly leaders with a heart for improving the lives of their followers. Possessing strong leadership abilities requires a solid groundwork. How can your employees trust you with both major and minor decisions if you can’t be relied upon yourself? While they might show you some interest, it won’t be genuine enthusiasm or dedication.

ALSO READ: The 4 Ways to Identify Your Blind Spots

The rationale behind this is straightforward: if people are unsure of the decision’s or direction’s veracity, they will not know who to believe. They might follow for a while, but it would be on condition, very slowly, or with doubts at every turn. Exemplify it if you possess integrity. Before others start to view you as untrustworthy, fix your integrity issues as soon as possible.

3. Security

A trustworthy leader is one who exudes confidence—not bluster but genuine self-assurance, the kind that doesn’t require a posse of followers who are just trying to win over the boss. In my view, a connection with God is the surest way to gain an authentic feeling of self-worth, the type of confidence that is unshakeable no matter what. Understanding that He made me and loves me is more powerful than any self-help book. Knowing that Jesus Christ made the supreme sacrifice for my sins has humbled me and given me strength. Being aware of God’s immense love for me is a tremendous thing. When leaders have self-confidence, they devote themselves to assisting others in reaching their maximum potential. A leader who is secure in their position is able to encourage those who will follow them.

4. Authenticity

Being genuine is essential for establishing rapport, building trust, and maintaining loyalty. Leaders should be authentic first and foremost. Fake news is easily identifiable. Although I am reserved at first, I am quick to crack jokes and open up when I get to know someone. Publicly, I appear more serious than when I’m alone with myself. That is my true self; pretending to be someone else would be dishonest and fake. Someone another might be more naturally charismatic or able to strike up conversations with strangers. Still, neither I, nor anybody else, has any business pretending to be someone we aren’t. We ought to put to good use the abilities that God has given us.

As the son of a mother who was just sixteen years old, I spent my formative years in a dangerous Miami neighborhood. Among the many hardships I endured as a child growing up without a father—not having him watch my wrestling, football, basketball, or baseball games—was the fact that he never taught me how to swim. Although it may be difficult to believe, I am not referring to that type of swimming. Actually, I’m not even referring to swimming when I say that. All men should be familiar with these abilities.

In a way, they are analogous to the various swimming strokes. The same goes for passing them on: if our dads didn’t teach them to us, find another man you can trust and respect to teach them to us. Not until I was 33 years old did I encounter a man like him. My 16-year marriage ended, subsequent relationships fizzled out, and money problems ensued because of that delay. Even if no one has instructed you thus far, there is still time. Every man should be proficient in these four areas.

1. The Backstroke

Accepting and growing from one’s prior experiences—including hurts, habits, and hangups—is something every man must do. Though it sheds light on who we are as men, our history does not absolve us of responsibility for our actions in the here and now or in the future. Legend has it that a man’s fate is sealed if he refuses to reflect on and grow from his mistakes. Mastering the backstroke will save you from having to live through the mistakes of the past.

2. The Butterfly Stroke

One of man’s primary responsibilities is to seek for, embrace, and fulfill his unique calling in this world. Though all men begin their lives as caterpillars, it was never meant for them to spend eternity clinging to their bellies. Because flying, not crawling, was his destiny and design, he was thought to metamorphose into a butterfly. However, mastering the butterfly stroke requires deliberate practice rather than passive observation.

3. The Breast Stroke

It is a man’s duty to figure out how to win his wife’s heart. This is an area where many guys have felt they are just barely surviving. Whether you’re planning to get married or not, it’s important for men to learn not just how to love women, but also how their hearts function.

4. The Freestyle Stroke

Men everywhere need to master the art of open, honest communication with their kids. Conquering a woman’s heart is one thing, but winning over a child’s is an entirely different ballgame. For a father to be an effective healer and a safe haven for his children, he must master the art of encouraging open communication about difficult emotions.

It all happened in 20 seconds. The Rams’ starting quarterback was Nick Foles, and they had dropped their previous two games. Foles, quarterbacks coach Chris Weinke, backup quarterbacks Case Keenum, and Sean Mannion, and the rest of the team sat in a game-planning room. Suddenly, Jeff Fischer, head coach, came into the room. Foles was thanked for his time in the role, but he was informed that he would no longer be the team’s starting quarterback. Fischer then bowed out as abruptly as he had entered, catching Foles off guard. Just two years after being named to the pro bowl, Foles opted to call it quits at the end of that season. It’s over.

How did he go from being a nobody at that point to the MVP of the Super Bowl just two years later? In his book Believe It: My Journey of Success, Failure, and Overcoming the Odds, Foles shares his inspiring life story. His self-deception was the largest roadblock on his path to rediscovering the thrill of playing and rising above defeat. In fact, I think it’s a problem for any man. Men lose their authority when they habitually believe lies. Foles’s outlook on the game was transformed after he learned to recognize and disregard falsehoods, and he went on to win the Super Bowl. In what ways will this affect you? Here are 3 myths that males commonly hold about themselves.

1. I am what I do.

If you let this falsehood enter your thinking, you will never be able to surpass your previous accomplishments. To win is to succeed. To lose is to be a loser. Just the facts. Foles was deceived and believed this. He was confident like he was before the last game. He felt liberated when he understood his identity is not determined by his past achievements or failures. He realized that his actual identity is not his accomplishments but God’s unending love for him. After that happened, football had nothing to do with building character. All he had to do was make use of his divinely bestowed talents. What special abilities has God endowed you with? You shouldn’t gauge your worth against their. What you are is priceless. You guys should just go outside and play.

2. I am what people say about me.

If you buy into this falsehood, you’ll feel as good (in your head) as the last compliment you received. As a result, many men hide their true selves from the world in order to fit in. They spend their time attempting to conform to the expectations of those around them. The person is just pretending to live. Do you require constant reassurance? When someone says anything terrible about you, does it send you spiraling? Positive reinforcement is essential, and the sting of criticism is real. You will remain a hollow shell of a human being unless you can face the truth and accept yourself. There will always be someone who will mistrust you, think critically about you, and say awful things about you. You may as well deal with it now. No matter what anyone says, you look great.

3. I am what I have.

If you buy into this myth, you’ll be worth whatever you have amassed materially and socially. You’ll become a glutton because there’s never enough to satisfy. You’ll be frightened and worried about losing what you have. And it will cause you to feel bad about yourself when you compare yourself to others. Your wealth and your employment (or your lack thereof) do not define you. You are not what you accomplish or how much sway you have in society.

Why are you valuable?

The realization that Foles is valuable as described below changed his life. God, who made him, loves him without conditions. Because of this, he will always be remembered. I share his belief. Why should anyone care about you?

Inspire trust

Both the leader and the followers must have faith in one another. The most effective leaders in teams work hard to gain their colleagues’ trust by being transparent, giving them responsibility, and encouraging their ideas.

2. Motivate with positivity

Good leaders inspire their teams to work together. Collaborative leaders aim to drive their staff to do their best work by utilizing positive reinforcement and incentives rather than mistrust and dread, as is the case with some other leadership styles.

3. Delegate responsibilities

While collaborative leaders focus on reaching a consensus and encouraging open dialogue among team members, they also recognize that each member brings something special to the table. By distributing work based on each team member’s unique set of skills, a collaborative leader encourages everyone on the team to use those skills to the fullest.

Communicate clearly

A leader who is able to work well with others must have excellent communication skills. The collaborative leader needs to be able to set the stage for meetings, especially when they are looking for input or feedback, and then gather and analyze the data that their team gives.

5. Takes risks

Leaders who work well with others tend to be brave. They inspire their team members to attempt new things and come up with creative solutions by cultivating a community and atmosphere based on mutual respect and originality.

Leaders who are able to work well with others are willing to risk losing some productivity in the search of new and novel solutions.

Solve problems

A collaborative leader must have a foundational understanding of the industry and the organization’s objectives in order to effectively steer their teams. Knowing how to take that information and use it to structure smart talks and implement creative decisions is crucial.

7. Believe in transparency

Open communication is essential for leaders who foster teamwork. They want their employees’ opinions and ideas, so they must provide them with enough knowledge about corporate KPIs and goals so that they may make educated judgments.

Teams can encounter many challenges when trying to work together. Here are eleven of the most prevalent barriers to teamwork in the workplace, along with suggestions for addressing each one:

1. Ineffective leadership

Teams can only achieve their goals with the consistent guidance, input, and encouragement of leaders who model these behaviors. Thus, inadequate leadership can cause teams to feel alienated and disengaged, thus impacting their ability to collaborate.

In these cases, leaders need to take responsibility by providing additional opportunities for teamwork, assisting team members in skill development, and discovering methods to promote productive collaboration.

2. Goal confusion

The first step toward productive teamwork is usually the identification of common objectives. This might be difficult for teams if they don’t fully comprehend or agree upon the goals of their job. Rather than having everyone on the team guess what the end goal is, they can build a consistent procedure for goal setting, analysis, and workflow planning.

3. Communication gaps

Professionals need effective communication skills to build relationships with their coworkers, share their ideas, hear those of others, and convey their own expectations. When there is a breakdown in communication, team members may become confused about their roles and whether or not they have met expectations. To bridge these gaps and improve collaboration, teams can consciously work to improve their communication abilities.

4. Lack of trust

Professionals on a team typically need to build mutual trust and mutual respect in order to collaborate effectively and achieve their collective goals. Without trust, team members may be hesitant to provide constructive criticism or honest opinions during group projects.

Furthermore, a lack of trust can lead to misunderstandings and arguments, which can further hinder teamwork. Team-building exercises and consistent opportunities for collaboration can help professionals cultivate trusting connections.

5. Inequitable decision-making

In a team atmosphere, it’s usual for a single team member to assume more responsibility than others and monopolize decision-making duties. This unequal dynamic typically arises when some team members are more outgoing, more skilled, or more prone to an autonomous work style.

However, if introverted team members who are used to working collaboratively start to feel their contributions aren’t valued, they may begin to contribute less. By democratizing processes and making sure everyone has a voice, teams can overcome unfair decision-making procedures.

6. Team size

Three- to six-person professional teams tend to work more well together than larger groups. This is because people in smaller groups are more likely to get to know one another, form positive relationships, and divide up tasks fairly.

Because of this, members of a team that is too big may have trouble sharing responsibilities and identifying their specific roles. Leaders can mitigate the effects of large groups by limiting the number of experts appointed to each team and making sure everyone is on the same page with their goals.

Here are five tried-and-true methods for controlling your temper at work and boosting your EQ:

1. Take a deep breath

The parasympathetic nervous system is stimulated in response to deep breathing, causing the body to enter a state of relaxation. Reducing stress and regaining emotional equilibrium via slowing the heart rate, lowering blood pressure, and relaxing muscles.

2. Practice mindfulness

Mindfulness is the practice of spending nonjudgmental, focused attention on the present moment. Rather than letting yourself be swept away by your anger, you can recognize its

emergence as soon as it does, examine your thoughts and feelings without reacting impulsively, and decide on a more positive course of action. Practicing the Pomodoro technique, cleaning up your work area, and remembering why you’re there are all great ways to cultivate workplace mindfulness.

3. Identify triggers

Knowing what makes you angry might help you avoid or deal with events that could otherwise cause you to lose your cool. You can learn to manage or avoid triggers by detecting patterns and common triggers, and then developing skills including perspective shifting, boundary setting, and seeking support.

4. Use positive self-talk

Substituting positive, rational, and affirming comments for negative, irrational ones is what we mean when we talk to ourselves in a positive way. You may change your viewpoint, lessen the intensity of your anger, and approach circumstances with more of a level head if you challenge negative assumptions and reframe your views.

5. Seek support

When you confide in a trusted coworker, supervisor, or friend about your struggles, you gain validation, new insights, and emotional support. You’ll learn more about the problem, have more options for dealing with your anger, and feel less alone if you do this.

Actions, rather than words, are used in nonverbal communication to convey meaning. Nonverbal communication allows people to convey emotions such as joy, interest, concern, gratitude, and self-assurance. Body language, facial expressions, and tone of voice are all forms of nonverbal communication. One of the most powerful methods of conveying meaning in the workplace is through nonverbal means of interaction. This can happen in a variety of work settings, from formal meetings to informal chats.

1. Proper eye contact

ALSO READ: Best 5 ways to encourage open communication

When people feel that their opinions matter at work, they tend to work more. Making direct eye contact with the other person while they are talking can make them feel more comfortable. If you want to show someone you’re paying attention to what they’re saying, look at them instead

than at your screen, papers, or phone. Turning on your camera for video chats helps foster a courteous connection between coworkers, and maintaining eye contact while you reply to them keeps the conversation interesting.

2. Positive tone of voice

Verbal communication includes talking, but the way you say things can also be seen as a form of nonverbal communication. Be conscious of your tone of voice at all times to ensure that it accurately conveys the message you desire to convey in person or via a video conference call. When communicating with coworkers or superiors, it’s important to keep a cheerful attitude.

3. Personal appearance

The way you carry yourself can speak more about you than any amount of words ever could. You may amaze your coworkers with your professionalism and pride in your work if you take care of your appearance at work. This is true even if you work from the comfort of your own home.

4. Good posture

In the workplace, your posture and the way you sit can convey a lot about your attitude and level of focus. In a job interview, sitting or standing up straight can convey interest in the conversation and self-assurance.

5. Appropriate touch

The pre-COVID workplace saw an increase in the use of touch for communicating. People’s comfort levels with physical contact have always varied, even before the advent of social distance standards. Increasing your cultural IQ might help you connect with coworkers on a deeper level.

6. Facial expressions

It’s common for people to read your facial expressions as you converse in order to guess your next move. Remember that your face can convey what you’re feeling or thinking even in a virtual interview. Positive body language during discussion includes smiling, nodding, and raising one’s eyebrows.

7. Personal space

When having a private talk with someone, you can decide to get a little bit closer to them. This demonstrates that you value the discourse and want to hear the other person clearly. Make sure there is enough room for you and your partner to feel relaxed.

The workplace is just one of the many places where we regularly engage in communication. Communication is vital for many different reasons, including making connections, exchanging ideas, assigning tasks, leading a team, and many others. This is true whether you’re nodding your head slightly in agreement or presenting information to a huge gathering.

ALSO READ: Best 5 ways to encourage open communication

Investing time and effort into honing your verbal and nonverbal communication abilities will pay dividends throughout your professional life. While it takes time and practice, communication and interpersonal skills are undoubtedly feasible to be both strengthened and perfected.

Types of communication

The techniques in which we communicate with one another are varied. For example, you might employ verbal communication when presenting a presentation with a group. Emails and resumes are two examples of written communication. Here’s a deeper dive into the four major classes of speech:

1. Verbal

Talking or signing to convey information is an example of verbal communication. It’s one of the most popular formats, and it comes in handy in a variety of situations, including talks, phone calls, video chats, and face-to-face meetings. Verbal exchanges are crucial due of their effectiveness. Complementing spoken communication with written and nonverbal cues can be effective.

2. Nonverbal

Body language, gestures, and facial expressions are all forms of nonverbal communication. It has a dual purpose and can be employed on purpose or accidentally. When you hear something interesting or exciting, you could smile unconsciously. Understanding the intentions and emotions of people is facilitated by paying attention to their nonverbal cues.

People that exhibit “closed” body language, such as by crossing their arms or hunching their shoulders, may be experiencing negative emotions. Their “open” body language, where they have both feet on the floor and their arms are at their sides or resting on the table, indicates that they are in a good mood and ready to listen.

3. Visual

Visual communication is the process of conveying ideas and concepts by visual means such as pictures, drawings, sketches, charts, and graphs. Presentations benefit greatly from the incorporation of visuals to supplement the written and/or spoken word. Due to individual differences, some people may find it easier to absorb information if it is presented in a visual format.

4. Written

Using symbols like letters and numbers on paper or a computer screen to express meaning is called written communication. It’s useful since it preserves data in a searchable format. Writing is often used to disseminate knowledge through books, pamphlets, blogs, letters, memos and more. Workplace writing communication typically takes the form of email or online chat.
