Priorities and the process for making important decisions were at the heart of the conversation in my men’s small group. I dare you to name the five things you value most in life, and I’ll be the first to do it. Things like family, religion, and maintaining one’s health are what I mean. Attempt to incorporate a minimum of five.

Things that kept coming up were the ones we discussed. After that, I had them name the thing (apart from sleeping) that they feel occupies the most of their time. Work, TV, housework, and driving the kids to and from activities were among the responses.

We discussed the difficulties of dealing with everyday life that does not align with our priorities. Our conversation over possible strategies for aligning the lists was quite fruitful. Try compiling your own list and comparing the results. If you want to know how to make your priorities a reality every single day, here are our lists and the things you need to do.

1. Conversation.

We can and should start by talking. The guys in my group have discovered that just by discussing the conflict between our goals and the reality we face, we can often bring about positive change. We also discovered that talking to our partner about it helped a lot. Simply said, being self-aware is a step in the right direction. Stop squandering time because, well, life is brief.

2. Action Plan.

Then we found out that plans of action work. Intentionally working toward defined goals, making incremental progress, paying attention to even little improvements, and recognizing success along the way makes achievement appear more accessible when we create short and long term plans.

3. Support System.

Our mutual assistance is of the utmost importance. Living in a community where people are willing to provide a hand is essential. Together, we are stronger. Men are more likely to give in to positive peer pressure and require the support of other strong men for encouragement. We can make a difference by surrounding ourselves with other families who are also determined to focus on what’s truly important.

4. Commitment.

When we consider committing to healthy lifestyle changes as a family, it helps. For instance, one dad begged his wife to make sure he actually spent more time with the kids. He and his wife collaborated on a strategy. Accomplishment necessitates modesty, dedication, cohesiveness, and responsibility. When he enlisted the help of two other men from church who shared some of his objectives, things got much easier. Having fun with other dads; receiving positive reinforcement from mothers. Ralph lamented that his relationship with his children was at an all-time high, despite the fact that his golf skill was declining. When we band together, we can accomplish more.

There is a delicate balance between being faithful and being idiotic, according to a friend of mine. Why then is there a distinction? Faith, in my view, is moving forward with a change even when the outcome is unclear. And it’s ridiculous to expect your life to improve when you don’t even try to alter anything.

In my opinion, there are five pitfalls that no guy can afford to fall into if he wants to be a loyal man and not an idiot. Despite my moniker as “The Foolish Five,” we are all naive enough to fall for their traps. I will explain.

The first is pride.

This is the pitfall of thinking we can get along without other people’s assistance. We think we’re capable of handling everything on our own. “I got this” is a common expression among us. “I am already aware of that.” “It is my decision if it is to be.” In reality, a man’s strength is directly proportional to the quantity of stronger guys he associates with; if you disagree, just ask a weight lifter.

The second trap is the commitment trap, or should I say the lack of commitment.

We fall into this pitfall when we stop trying and quit when things become difficult or don’t meet our expectations. It can be something small, but more often than not it’s something major, like giving up on our marriage, our relationship with a parent from whom we’ve grown apart, or our goals.

The third trap is ignorance.

On the surface, ignorance does not necessarily constitute a bad thing; yet, there is a distinction between knowing nothing and understanding exactly what one does not know. “Unconscious incompetence” is what I mean here. Avoid falling into this trap by being honest about your ignorance and asking clarifying questions instead of acting as though you know something when you don’t. “The only dumb question is the one you don’t ask; because if you don’t ask, you’re still dumb because you still don’t know.” I tell my students this all the time.

The fourth man trap is laziness.

When we’re ignorant, we either don’t know or act as if we do, but when we’re lazy, we ignore our knowledge and do nothing because “I just don’t feel like it.” Refusing to get up and move about is what it is. Doing nothing until one “feels like it” is a surefire recipe for failure. One wise man told me, “Do what you have to do, so you can eventually do what you want to do.” That was Denzel Washington, an Oscar-winning actor.

And finally, the last trap is the apathy trap.

The “I don’t care” mentality is apathy in action. It happens when we fail to prioritize our own needs to the point where we seek counseling to address past hurts, fail to honor our wives and understand their hearts, neglect our children, spend too much time playing video games or watching sports, or watch pornographic media.

Attempts at risk-taking in life don’t always succeed. Lauren and I truly mulled over our alternatives when I was ready to depart the Steelers in 1988. Two coaches who went on to become Hall of Famers—Bill Parcels of the Giants and Bill Walsh of the 49ers—offered me jobs in the same offseason. Marty Schottenheimer in Kansas City and Sam Wyche in Cincinnati were also great interviewees. Each of the four men was an excellent coach and a nice person. I was familiar with both Bill Walsh and Sam Wyche from my time in San Francisco as coaches, so I felt at ease with any of them. It was every defensive coach’s fantasy to sit in a room and discuss football philosophy with Bill Parcels, Bill Belichick, and Romeo Crennel, especially since Bill had just won his first Super Bowl.

Unfortunately, Lauren and I were planning to raise a family at the time, and we felt that navigating the complexities of both New York and San Francisco would be too much. Because the position in Cincinnati was not extended to me, we were forced to hire Marty Schottenheimer in Kansas City. What I learned and the reasons it failed are these.

There is no safe path.

Kansas City has an excellent standard of living and would have been an ideal location to establish a family. My reasons for wanting to leave the Chiefs after three years were less related to my work with the team and more personal. Both the 49ers and the Giants had already won Super Bowls by this point. There is no easy way through life; I might have easily second-guessed my decision. The finest information we have allows us to make decisions, yet sometimes it feels like we’re still in the dark.

Discern and make your decision.

My takeaway is to get all the facts you can right now, talk to God about it, make a choice, and then move on. Though I do try to avoid making the same mistakes twice, I never go back and regret a decision I’ve already made. It produces no results. Despite our loss in the Super Bowl, I still benefit greatly from the experiences I had and the connections I made in Kansas City.

Learn, but don’t second guess.

If you can’t turn back the clock on previous choices, it’s better to ride it out, take it easy, and make the most of your current situation. While some of your choices will turn out well, others will backfire spectacularly. The fact that no team can win every game is a valuable lesson I picked up from sports. And it’s possible to win championships while suffering setbacks. We won in my book nonetheless since we left the safety net behind and are now playing the game of life to the fullest.

Stand on your convictions.

People will question your choices from time to time, particularly if they disagree with your worldview. A lot of people think that you should always take a promotion when offered one, regardless of whether it’s for financial or social reasons. Some may accuse you of being irresponsible if you are a father who refuses a promotion or resigns from your job due to your lack of involvement at home or the fact that you live in an unsuitable area for raising children. Ignore what they say. Stand firm in your beliefs. Stand out.

Can I trust you? A good leader has many attributes, one of which is trustworthiness. Being trustworthy requires a certain set of qualities. Our character is built on a foundation of trustworthy attributes, which are internal qualities. These characteristics are inherent to our identity and will always be present, no matter what. I have simplified things by identifying four main characteristics of a trustworthy person:

1. Competence

Having a clear goal and purpose in mind is essential for achieving success in any effort. In other words, we shouldn’t expect to know everything, but we should be well-equipped to handle whatever comes our way. If our subordinates do not believe we are competent to lead, they will not stay under our wing. They trust us to lead them wisely, not because they think we’ll never make a bad choice.

Every leader needs the ability to articulate the reasoning behind their decisions, whether it’s the relative merits of several courses of action, the suitability of their marketing and sales tactics to the products they are peddling, the specifics of their training routine, or the anticipated effectiveness of a certain play against the opposing defense. Never mind if we don’t know everything; what matters is that those we lead have faith in our abilities to guide them toward realizing the organization’s goals.

2. Integrity

Honesty is essential for a leader to succeed, if not the most important factor. Particularly leaders with a heart for improving the lives of their followers. Possessing strong leadership abilities requires a solid groundwork. How can your employees trust you with both major and minor decisions if you can’t be relied upon yourself? While they might show you some interest, it won’t be genuine enthusiasm or dedication.

ALSO READ: The 4 Ways to Identify Your Blind Spots

The rationale behind this is straightforward: if people are unsure of the decision’s or direction’s veracity, they will not know who to believe. They might follow for a while, but it would be on condition, very slowly, or with doubts at every turn. Exemplify it if you possess integrity. Before others start to view you as untrustworthy, fix your integrity issues as soon as possible.

3. Security

A trustworthy leader is one who exudes confidence—not bluster but genuine self-assurance, the kind that doesn’t require a posse of followers who are just trying to win over the boss. In my view, a connection with God is the surest way to gain an authentic feeling of self-worth, the type of confidence that is unshakeable no matter what. Understanding that He made me and loves me is more powerful than any self-help book. Knowing that Jesus Christ made the supreme sacrifice for my sins has humbled me and given me strength. Being aware of God’s immense love for me is a tremendous thing. When leaders have self-confidence, they devote themselves to assisting others in reaching their maximum potential. A leader who is secure in their position is able to encourage those who will follow them.

4. Authenticity

Being genuine is essential for establishing rapport, building trust, and maintaining loyalty. Leaders should be authentic first and foremost. Fake news is easily identifiable. Although I am reserved at first, I am quick to crack jokes and open up when I get to know someone. Publicly, I appear more serious than when I’m alone with myself. That is my true self; pretending to be someone else would be dishonest and fake. Someone another might be more naturally charismatic or able to strike up conversations with strangers. Still, neither I, nor anybody else, has any business pretending to be someone we aren’t. We ought to put to good use the abilities that God has given us.

As a marksman, Matt Emmons has won world championships. At the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, he was competing in the 50-meter three-position rifle event with a commanding lead going into the final round. He fired three rounds that hit the target, but the automated scoring system didn’t give him any points. He stood there perplexed. He summoned the judge, and the subject was brought in to determine the exact nature of the incident. There was no one there. Perfectly solid.

On the other hand, the target in the opposite lane featured three more holes—holes created by Matt’s shots. He dropped to seventh place in the standings as a result of his error. The moral of the story is that you can’t realize your full potential until you have a goal—your own goal, not the aim of another else. God has great plans for your life, but you won’t be able to realize them until you follow your heart’s desires.

Setting Goals

Instead than focusing on numbers, I try to achieve more qualitative goals. Instead of focusing on winning a certain amount of games, my goal has always been to build a championship-caliber team full of outstanding individuals who will serve as positive examples in the community. Every year as I looked back on our season, those were the things I considered. Since there is no other realistic metric to use, I evaluated our teams based on how well we did in comparison to our potential.

In my own life, I make an effort to get better every year. I aspired to become an excellent defensive coach and assist my players in reaching their full potential when I was a young assistant. A secondary goal was to keep growing as a player and coach in the hopes of one day being considered for the position of defensive coordinator. The real reason wasn’t until much later on when I was trying to position myself to become a head coach.

Taking Risks

A certain level of risk-taking is sometimes necessary to achieve such objectives. “You can’t steal second with your foot still on first” is a wise adage that applies to both baseball and life. My Tampa Bay crew lost a great coach when Herm Edwards departed to join the New York Jets as head coach. Thanks to our accomplishment and the limited number of slots available (there were only 32 in the NFL), we had a lot of candidates.

A relatively young coach from the University of Cincinnati named Mike Tomlin was hired by me. I hired Mike despite his short tenure at the university because I was impressed by his enthusiasm as a teacher. It may have seemed risky to some that I was replacing an esteemed veteran NFL coach with someone who had never coached in the NFL before.

ALSO READ: The 4 Things Every Man Should Master

On the other hand, Mike was the daring one. With his present coaching position, he felt secure in Cincinnati. Still, he stepped outside his comfort zone to join a staff that was going through some changes; this was a group where rumors were flying around about whether or not we would all be let go if we didn’t make it to the Super Bowl. If Mike had come with us, he might not have had a job the next season. Coming to the Buccaneers from the University of Cincinnati may have seemed like a no-brainer to some, but Mike had to weigh his options and take a chance.

Take chances; do they thrill you? We are generally a cautious people. I mean, this isn’t completely terrible. Our brains are hardwired to take stock of our situation, identify potential threats, and then select the course of action that will keep us alive. It would be wise for you to continue doing that. On the other hand, we all have an innate desire for excitement. We also have that built into our wiring. We find ourselves captivated by viewing great movies, visiting exotic countries, and going to sporting events for the same reason.

Faced with adversity, we want to emerge stronger. It is well-known that the most effective way to learn is to challenge oneself, do something new, and then fail. Taking calculated risks is, thus, fundamental to development and education. Additionally, there are three chances that every man should seize during his lifetime. Do you still need to take them?

1. Speak publicly.

The majority of individuals really hate having to speak in front of an audience. But that’s the very reason you ought to do it. The most fearsome dragons protect the most valuable things in children’s stories. Wondering why? Reason being, the most difficult tasks often lead to the most rewarding outcomes. The most essential thing somebody can do, according to Warren Buffett, is to work on their communication abilities. The capacity to communicate effectively is associated with almost 85% of monetary success, according to a poll just issued by the Carnegie Institute of Technology.

Is my point clear? On top of that, there’s the elation you get when you overcome a tremendous obstacle. It’s similar to how improving your communication skills will have a good effect on every connection in your life. You can’t possibly argue that this isn’t a risk worth taking, given the sheer number of new career prospects that will open up to you.

2. Create something.

Are there any creative impulses within you? So, you’re into woodworking, huh? What is poetry? Composing an own song? Is this photography? In order to make the world a better place, we need you to tap into your imagination, which has limitless potential.

The world needs your creativity, but that’s not all. Like me, you do. Your emotional and physical well-being will benefit from engaging in creative activities, says a new report in Medical News Today. Feeling better is an additional benefit.

3. Mentor someone.

The impact of mentors on individuals’ lives is significant. Putting money into other people’s lives is risky business. They could be disinterested. You could offer them incorrect guidance. Eventually, you’ll find yourself in a position where you’re unsure of how to guide them. Still, find someone to mentor.

ALSO READ: The 4 Things Every Man Should Master

More males should take the initiative to support and mentor younger generations. Mentoring can have a profound impact on people’s lives in a variety of contexts, including sharing life lessons with a local kid, lending moral support to a new employee, or coaching a youth soccer team. Putting yourself out there is scary, but the payoff might be huge, both for you and for those around you.

It all happened in 20 seconds. The Rams’ starting quarterback was Nick Foles, and they had dropped their previous two games. Foles, quarterbacks coach Chris Weinke, backup quarterbacks Case Keenum, and Sean Mannion, and the rest of the team sat in a game-planning room. Suddenly, Jeff Fischer, head coach, came into the room. Foles was thanked for his time in the role, but he was informed that he would no longer be the team’s starting quarterback. Fischer then bowed out as abruptly as he had entered, catching Foles off guard. Just two years after being named to the pro bowl, Foles opted to call it quits at the end of that season. It’s over.

How did he go from being a nobody at that point to the MVP of the Super Bowl just two years later? In his book Believe It: My Journey of Success, Failure, and Overcoming the Odds, Foles shares his inspiring life story. His self-deception was the largest roadblock on his path to rediscovering the thrill of playing and rising above defeat. In fact, I think it’s a problem for any man. Men lose their authority when they habitually believe lies. Foles’s outlook on the game was transformed after he learned to recognize and disregard falsehoods, and he went on to win the Super Bowl. In what ways will this affect you? Here are 3 myths that males commonly hold about themselves.

1. I am what I do.

If you let this falsehood enter your thinking, you will never be able to surpass your previous accomplishments. To win is to succeed. To lose is to be a loser. Just the facts. Foles was deceived and believed this. He was confident like he was before the last game. He felt liberated when he understood his identity is not determined by his past achievements or failures. He realized that his actual identity is not his accomplishments but God’s unending love for him. After that happened, football had nothing to do with building character. All he had to do was make use of his divinely bestowed talents. What special abilities has God endowed you with? You shouldn’t gauge your worth against their. What you are is priceless. You guys should just go outside and play.

2. I am what people say about me.

If you buy into this falsehood, you’ll feel as good (in your head) as the last compliment you received. As a result, many men hide their true selves from the world in order to fit in. They spend their time attempting to conform to the expectations of those around them. The person is just pretending to live. Do you require constant reassurance? When someone says anything terrible about you, does it send you spiraling? Positive reinforcement is essential, and the sting of criticism is real. You will remain a hollow shell of a human being unless you can face the truth and accept yourself. There will always be someone who will mistrust you, think critically about you, and say awful things about you. You may as well deal with it now. No matter what anyone says, you look great.

3. I am what I have.

If you buy into this myth, you’ll be worth whatever you have amassed materially and socially. You’ll become a glutton because there’s never enough to satisfy. You’ll be frightened and worried about losing what you have. And it will cause you to feel bad about yourself when you compare yourself to others. Your wealth and your employment (or your lack thereof) do not define you. You are not what you accomplish or how much sway you have in society.

Why are you valuable?

The realization that Foles is valuable as described below changed his life. God, who made him, loves him without conditions. Because of this, he will always be remembered. I share his belief. Why should anyone care about you?

The following are some suggestions for breaking out of your comfort zone and into new experiences:

1. Discover more about potential challenges

When you have more information about a problem or scenario, you may feel less intimidated by it. You may be better prepared to take on the task at hand and have more realistic expectations after gathering sufficient information. You can prepare for an upcoming event or challenge by:

2. Devise a plan

Next, establish a strategy for breaking out of your comfort zone. The first step in tackling any new issue is to figure out what kinds of problems you might run across and how you might solve them.

Then, write down each action you can do to get out of your comfort zone, starting with the easiest activity. Establishing checkpoints or intermediate objectives allows you to monitor your development.

3. Take small steps

4. Find accountability partners

You can obtain the motivation and support you need to really do something outside your comfort zone by announcing your intention to do so. Share your plan with close friends and family. Tell your manager or a trusted advisor in your field if this is something that has arisen at work. Sharing your goals with others can help you stay on track to achieve them.

5. Stay positive

As you push yourself out of your comfort zone, you may experience negative emotions. While it’s important to be ready for the worst, it’s also important to convince yourself that you can triumph over whatever comes your way. Consider challenges to be training wheels on the road to independence from your safe habits.

6. Think creativity

Using your imagination can help you approach a problem from a fresh perspective. You could potentially break out of your routine and learn to tackle old problems in novel ways.

It’s common practice for managers who work well together to:

1. Inspire trust

Both the leader and the followers must have faith in one another. The most effective leaders in teams work hard to gain their colleagues’ trust by being transparent, giving them responsibility, and encouraging their ideas.

2. Motivate with positivity

Good leaders inspire their teams to work together. Collaborative leaders aim to drive their staff to do their best work by utilizing positive reinforcement and incentives rather than mistrust and dread, as is the case with some other leadership styles.

3. Delegate responsibilities

While collaborative leaders focus on reaching a consensus and encouraging open dialogue among team members, they also recognize that each member brings something special to the table. By distributing work based on each team member’s unique set of skills, a collaborative leader encourages everyone on the team to use those skills to the fullest.

4. Communicate clearly

A leader who is able to work well with others must have excellent communication skills. The collaborative leader needs to be able to set the stage for meetings, especially when they are looking for input or feedback, and then gather and analyze the data that their team gives.

5. Takes risks

Leaders who work well with others tend to be brave. They inspire their team members to attempt new things and come up with creative solutions by cultivating a community and atmosphere based on mutual respect and originality.

Leaders who are able to work well with others are willing to risk losing some productivity in the search of new and novel solutions.

6. Solve problems

A collaborative leader must have a foundational understanding of the industry and the organization’s objectives in order to effectively steer their teams. Knowing how to take that information and use it to structure smart talks and implement creative decisions is crucial.

7. Believe in transparency

Open communication is essential for leaders who foster teamwork. They want their employees’ opinions and ideas, so they must provide them with enough knowledge about corporate KPIs and goals so that they may make educated judgments.

Teams can encounter many challenges when trying to work together. Here are eleven of the most prevalent barriers to teamwork in the workplace, along with suggestions for addressing each one:

1. Ineffective leadership

Teams can only achieve their goals with the consistent guidance, input, and encouragement of leaders who model these behaviors. Thus, inadequate leadership can cause teams to feel alienated and disengaged, thus impacting their ability to collaborate.

In these cases, leaders need to take responsibility by providing additional opportunities for teamwork, assisting team members in skill development, and discovering methods to promote productive collaboration.

2. Goal confusion

The first step toward productive teamwork is usually the identification of common objectives. This might be difficult for teams if they don’t fully comprehend or agree upon the goals of their job. Rather than having everyone on the team guess what the end goal is, they can build a consistent procedure for goal setting, analysis, and workflow planning.

3. Communication gaps

Professionals need effective communication skills to build relationships with their coworkers, share their ideas, hear those of others, and convey their own expectations. When there is a breakdown in communication, team members may become confused about their roles and whether or not they have met expectations. To bridge these gaps and improve collaboration, teams can consciously work to improve their communication abilities.

4. Lack of trust

Professionals on a team typically need to build mutual trust and mutual respect in order to collaborate effectively and achieve their collective goals. Without trust, team members may be hesitant to provide constructive criticism or honest opinions during group projects.

Furthermore, a lack of trust can lead to misunderstandings and arguments, which can further hinder teamwork. Team-building exercises and consistent opportunities for collaboration can help professionals cultivate trusting connections.

5. Inequitable decision-making

In a team atmosphere, it’s usual for a single team member to assume more responsibility than others and monopolize decision-making duties. This unequal dynamic typically arises when some team members are more outgoing, more skilled, or more prone to an autonomous work style.

However, if introverted team members who are used to working collaboratively start to feel their contributions aren’t valued, they may begin to contribute less. By democratizing processes and making sure everyone has a voice, teams can overcome unfair decision-making procedures.

6. Team size

Three- to six-person professional teams tend to work more well together than larger groups. This is because people in smaller groups are more likely to get to know one another, form positive relationships, and divide up tasks fairly.

Because of this, members of a team that is too big may have trouble sharing responsibilities and identifying their specific roles. Leaders can mitigate the effects of large groups by limiting the number of experts appointed to each team and making sure everyone is on the same page with their goals.
