Years before he became Google’s CEO, Sundar Pichai voiced his reservations regarding the company’s cooperation with Apple’s search engine. Pichai has previously expressed concern about Google’s “bad optics” in his role as head of the team that was responsible for developing the Chrome web browser in 2007. According to reports from the Justice Department, Google pays Apple $10 billion year to ensure that it is the pre-installed search engine on all Apple products, including the iPhone.

According to evidence provided by the Justice Department during the ongoing antitrust trial, Pichai sent emails to Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin in 2007 outlining how the arrangement with Apple may damage the user’s experience on browsers. The emails were written to emphasize how the agreement with Apple could affect the user’s experience.

“I am aware that we are urging that default be used, but at the same time, I believe that we ought to push them to have Yahoo as a choice on the pull down menu or some other simple option. Pichai stated his thoughts on the matter in an email, writing that “I don’t think it is a good user experience nor the optics is great for us to be the only provider in the browser.”

Statements from top executives of other technology companies, such as Microsoft, Apple, Samsung, and DuckDuckGo, have been included in the continuing litigation. These executives have shared their experiences with Alphabet’s search business and the competition it faces. In an effort to draw attention to the benefit that Apple is providing to Google, Microsoft’s Satya Nadella said in court that “it would be a game changer” for Bing to be the default search engine on Safari.

While this is going on, Google is attempting to defend itself in the ongoing trial by stating that users choose to use its search engine because it is superior to those of its competitors. The legal representatives for the corporation have stated that they do not believe the allegations that default status plays a significant influence in the company’s access to the market. The legal team representing Google contends that users can quickly switch their search engine with just a few clicks of the mouse.

Notably, Apple’s Safari web browser has used Google as its default search engine ever since the browser’s release in 2002. The year 2021 saw a renegotiation of the cooperation between Google and Apple.

According to a report, Google employees have criticised the CEO on Memegen, Google’s popular internal forum.

Reportedly, Google CEO Sundar Pichai is facing internal criticism for how the company introduced Bard, an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot that Pichai himself announced on February 7 and is viewed as a direct competitor to OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

Google employees have taken to Memegen, the popular internal forum of the tech giant, to criticise the CEO, describing Bard’s introduction as ‘rushed,’ ‘botched,’ and even ‘un-Googley.’

“Dear Sundar, the Bard launch and the layoffs were hurried, incompetent, and shortsighted. Please return to a long-term perspective,” read a message, which was followed by numerous updates from employees.

Another message stated that Pichai and the leadership deserved a “PerfNI,” referring to the company’s lowest performance rating. “In their pursuit of sharpening their focus, they are comically myopic and un-Googley,” it continued.

What transpired during Google Bard’s announcement?

On Monday of last week, Pichai introduced Google Bard to the world, a day before rival Microsoft announced it will integrate language-based AI capabilities into its Bing search engine.

Prabhakar Raghavan, the head of search, presented slides describing the capabilities of the chatbot during Wednesday’s formal unveiling of Bard. However, listeners expected to hear more. In addition, many employees were unaware that such an event was occurring. One presenter neglected to bring the required phone for the demonstration.

This was in addition to a Google-published online promotional video in which the software tool provided an incorrect response.

In Short

Google’s Bard committed a factual mistake in its very first demo, which has already been corrected.

The presenter couldn’t provide a demo of the phone at Google’s recent presentation in Paris because the gadget had been lost.

Following the two instances, Alphabet, the parent company of Google, had its market worth drop by USD $100 million

In the last few days, there have been several rumours claiming that Google is worried about ChatGPT and is vying for position in the AI-search market. Google recently released Bard, an AI-powered chatbot, adding fuel to the flames of such rumours. But Bard committed a factual mistake that has recently been pointed out in its very first demo. Additionally, the presenter was unable to demonstrate the phone at Google’s recent presentation in Paris since the gadget had been lost.
According to a Reuters story, the two occurrences caused Google’s parent firm Alphabet to lose $100 million in market value.

Google’s Bard commits factual error

In a Twitter promo for the chatbot, Google asks Bard to identify some recent findings made by the James Webb Space Telescope. Bard says in one of its points that the telescope captured the very first images of an extrasolar planet in its answer.

“JWST captured the first images of a planet beyond our solar system. These faraway planets are referred to as “exoplanets.” Exo means from outside, “Bard said.

That is not the case, however. According to NASA, the first photograph of an exoplanet was obtained in 2004. Reuters reported about the Google’s Bard mishap.

“This underlines the significance of a thorough testing process, something we’re beginning off this week with our Trusted Tester programme,” a Google spokesman said in response to the incident, according to The Verge. To ensure that Bard’s replies maintain a high standard for quality, safety, and information founded in real-world data, we’ll combine external input with our own internal testing.
Just before Google’s much anticipated press conference in Paris began, the inaccuracy in the demo video was pointed out. A presenter at the live-streamed event entered the stage to demonstrate the new Lens function. The sample phone, however, wasn’t there, thus the presenter was unable to continue with the presentation. The incident made some question whether Google is really losing sleep about the new participants in the market, even if the speaker handled it as gracefully as possible. Additionally, Google later removed the event footage.

As a consequence, Google’s parent firm Alphabet disclosed a loss in the stock market of USD $100 million.

Google, Bing, and ChatGPT

AI is the new buzzword, and since OpenAI’s chatbot ChatGPT became popular, the public has been exposed to a whole new universe of opportunities. ChatGPT is capable of a variety of tasks, ranging from writing code to producing poetry, and is frequently used. Microsoft and OpenAI have been partners for quite some time, and the two firms just announced that they are strengthening their cooperation.
Microsoft also just introduced a new version of their search engine Bing, which is driven on ChatGPT technology and is intended to directly compete with Google.

Also read:- Who will win the AI chatbot race, Google or Microsoft?

In an interview with The Verge, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said that robust competition in the search industry would not just generate more revenue for Microsoft, but also for publishers and advertisers. Google is the 800-pound giant in the search engine industry, he said, but with the innovation that Microsoft provides, they (Google) will undoubtedly want to “dance.”

He said, “First and foremost, I have the utmost respect for Google and what they’ve accomplished. They possess extraordinary skill. I appreciate Sundar Pichai and his colleagues tremendously. I only want that we innovate. Today, we introduced further competitiveness to the search. We’ve been at it, trust me, I’ve been at it for twenty years and I’ve been waiting for it. But at the end of the day, they are the 800-pound elephant in the room, and I hope that with our invention, they will want to come out and demonstrate that they can dance. I want everyone to know that we made them dance, and I believe it will be a beautiful day.”Bard
