Toronto:Wednesday morning, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife of 18 years, Sophie Gregoire, made an abrupt announcement that they are separating.

The couple issued identical public statements on Instagram in this regard. The statement stated that they “would like to share the news that after many deep and challenging conversations, we have decided to separate.”

They were married in Montreal in May 2005 and have three children: 14-year-old Ella-Grace, 15-year-old Xavier, and nine-year-old Hadrien.

According to a statement from the office of the prime minister (PMO), they have signed a separation agreement.

“As always, we remain a close-knit family with deep love and respect for each other and for everything we have built and will continue to build,” they wrote in separate Instagram posts.

It continued, “For the well-being of our children, we ask that you respect our and their privacy.”

There had been no reports or even rumours of a rift in the Trudeaus’ relationship, so the announcement was unexpected.

“They have worked to ensure that all legal and ethical steps regarding their decision to separate have been taken, and will continue to do so moving forward,” the PMO said in a statement quoted by CBC.

In February 2018, Sophie Gregoire Trudeau accompanied the Canadian prime minister on his 11-day official visit to India.

In 2003, Trudeau, 51, reportedly met Sophie Gregoire, 48, a former entertainment journalist, according to Globe and Mail.

“Both parents will be a constant presence in the lives of their children, and Canadians can expect to see the family frequently. Beginning the following week, the family will be on vacation together,” the PMO added in its statement on the matter.

His father, Pierre Elliot Trudeau, divorced his mother Margaret Trudeau in 1984, seven years after announcing their separation.

A pro-Khalistan Protest took place outside the Indian consulate in Toronto, Canada, where members of the Indian community unfurled the tricolor as a counter-protest.

On July 8, members of the Indian community in Toronto, Canada, displayed the national flag in opposition to a pro-Khalistan demonstration. To send a clear message to separatist elements, members of the Indian community held a counter-demonstration and unfurled the Indian tricolor in front of the consulate, where Khalistan supporters were displaying their flags. This comes days after posters featuring Indian diplomats in Canada and London proclaiming a July 8 pro-Khalistan rally surfaced on social media.

Saturday’s pro-Khalistan demonstration outside the Indian High Commission in London was relatively subdued and incident-free. The duration of the demonstration, which occurred between 12:30 and 2:30 GMT, was shorter than anticipated. In stark contrast to earlier protests held at the same location this year, only a handful of individuals defied the rain to attend the demonstration.

The demonstration was part of a series of protests held in cities around the globe, including Melbourne, San Francisco, and Toronto, to condemn the murder of Khalistani activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia on June 18. In India, Nijjar was sought on terrorism charges.

The Hindu reported that protesters in London displayed banners depicting India’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom and its Consul General in Birmingham, accusing them of being responsible for Nijjar’s murder. Recently, similar posters depicting the leaders of various Indian missions around the world circulated on social media platforms.

In addition to pro-Khalistan banners, there were also Pakistan and Kashmir support posters among the demonstrators on Saturday, according to the report. These posters highlighted the larger geopolitical dynamics at play within the protest.

In the meantime, India demanded on Friday that the British government immediately deport or prosecute the Khalistani elements in their country, as the “individual targeting” of Indian diplomats has become a major source of concern for New Delhi. During a meeting in New Delhi, National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval and his British counterpart Tim Barrow discussed the issue at length.

“The two parties agreed to increase cooperation in the fight against violent extremism and radicalism. In a democracy, violent extremism and radicalization cannot be justified, an official source told media.

The source added, “The Indian side raised the issue of extremist elements in the UK threatening individual officers of the Indian High Commission and urged the UK Government to take strong public action against these extremist elements, such as deportation or legal prosecution.”

After Seattle, Washington, in the United States, the casted discrimination conflict has now reached Toronto, Canada, where two factions — one in favour of a ban on caste-based discrimination and the other opposed to such a move — have begun fighting in a public school.

Last month, Seattle became the first city in the United States to prohibit caste discrimination after its local council passed a resolution proposed by an Indian-American politician and economist to include caste in the city’s non-discrimination policy.

The resolution proposed by upper-caste Hindu Kshama Sawant was approved by the Seattle City Council by a vote of six to one. Vote outcomes could have far-reaching effects on the issue of caste discrimination in the United States.

Proponents of caste discrimination were effective in bringing the motion to the Toronto District School Board for consideration (TDSB). At its meeting on March 8, the board referred the issue to the Ontario Human Rights Commission as a neutral observer to investigate and evaluate. In doing so, the board acknowledged that it lacks sufficient expertise in this area.

The TDSB’s decision follows the Seattle City Council’s passage of an ordinance prohibiting caste-based discrimination on February 21. Seattle was the first city outside of India to do so.

“Voting “Yes” on this proposal is in the best interest of all Toronto public school pupils. In an educational setting, caste discrimination can manifest in numerous ways, including casteist remarks, discrimination in social and online settings, and exclusion from dominant-caste spaces “In a letter to TDSB members, Seattle City Councilwoman Sawant stated:

On the other hand, the Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA), which has been waging a campaign against it, stated that singling out one community on these otherwise broad markers resulted in significant opposition from South Asian expatriates in Canada.

CoHNA Canada assisted the community in sending over 21,000 emails and making numerous phone calls to trustees in an effort to have their voices heard. The TDSB office in North York also witnessed significant sit-in protests while voting was taking place, with community members braving freezing temperatures for hours to make their voices heard, according to a press release.

CoHNA stated that the demand by caste discrimination activists that South Asians be ascribed “collective guilt” based solely on unverifiable personal anecdotes would be deemed bigoted, xenophobic, and downright racist if it were applied to almost any other group.

Also Read | US House votes unanimously to declassify Covid origins intel

Nikunj Trivedi, the president of CoHNA, stated, “This is nothing more than a return to colonialism where lawmakers who are supposed to be impartial make casually Hinduphobic remarks and parrot the outrageous propaganda of hate organisations.” “Attempts to profile a vulnerable minority group should not be tolerated,” he said.
