POCSO court has issued an arrest warrant for news presenter Deepak Chaurasia
New Delhi: In connection with the alleged transmission of “morphed, manipulated, and filthy” footage of a 10-year-old child and her family in connection with a sexual assault case against Asaram Bapu, a Gurugram POCSO court has issued an arrest warrant for news presenter Deepak Chaurasia.
The non-bailable warrant was issued by Additional Sessions Judge Shashi Chauhan, according to Bar and Bench.
According to reports, Chaurasia submitted an application stating that he would be conducting an interview with Uttar Pradesh chief minister Adityanath on the day of the hearing and would thus be unable to attend. The article claims that Chaurasia sent an email from the Uttar Pradesh chief minister’s office to him.
The judge ruled that there was “no coherent documented proof” and “no affidavit of support” for this personal exemption request.
The court said that the email Chaurasia had sent was not actually addressed to Chaurasia but to someone else. The court took issue with his having “a secret document on record,” as well.
According to Newslaundry’s report, this is the second time in more than three months that the court has issued an arrest order for Chaurasia. The first non-bailable warrant, according to the article, was issued on October 28 of last year after Chaurasia missed a hearing because of his health.
He later requested bail and approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court. His bail and surety bonds have now been revoked by the Gurugram court.
On September 23 of last year, Chaurasia filed the first application for exemption.
The current case is associated with a first information report submitted by a family member of the child in 2013. Anchors and executives from the stations News24, India News, and News Nation are among the eight people accused in the case. Chaurasia joined Zee News after working at News Nation previously.
Television watchdogs have already called Chaurasia out for using racial slurs during programmes.
