The BJP claims on Saturday that two tribal women were stripped naked and tortured a few days ago in West Bengal’s Malda while police remained a “mute spectator” amidst outrage over a viral video showing women being paraded nude by a mob in conflict-torn Manipur.
Amit Malviya, the director of the BJP’s I-T cell and co-incharge for West Bengal, stated that the incident occurred in Malda on July 19, with a “crazed mob baying for her blood.”
In addition, he uploaded a video with hazy images of the crime.
“It had all the makings of a tragedy that should have ‘broken’ Mamata Banerjee’s heart, and she, instead of merely being outraged, could have acted as Bengal’s home minister,” he tweeted, addressing Bengal’s chief minister Mamata Banerjee, who has been vocal in her condemnation of the Manipur incident.
The BJP has criticised Banerjee for sporadic acts of violence during the recently concluded panchayat elections in West Bengal.
The BJP has been highlighting similar cases of atrocities against women in states ruled by its rivals, such as the Congress and the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress, in response to opposition parties’ attacks on it over the incident of two women being paraded naked in ethnic violence-hit Manipur, where it is in power.
Malviya lashed out at Banerjee, saying she elected to do nothing in the case. “She neither condemned the barbarism nor expressed pain and anguish because doing so would have revealed her own failure as prime minister,” he said.
Malviya stated that the next day, she shed copious tears and screamed blue murder because it was politically expedient in response to her attack on the BJP over the Manipur incident, which prompted national outrage after a video of it went viral on May 4.
Malviya stated, “The horror in West Bengal continues.” Two tribal women were stripped naked, tortured, and brutally assaulted in the Pakua Hat area of the Bamangola Police Station in Malda, while police stood by and did nothing.
Minister of the Union Smriti Irani also responded to the Malda incident. “This (Manipur viral video) issue is not only delicate, but also has implications for national security, and opposition leaders are aware of this. However, the Opposition declined to discuss the matter on the floor of the House of Representatives. Extremely alarming is the fact that yesterday, a minister from the state of Rajasthan who spoke out against crimes against women in the state was summarily dismissed by the Congress. Equally disturbing is a video from Malda, West Bengal, which depicts two Dalit women being beaten and stripped. The Congress refused to hear the truth about atrocities committed against women in Rajasthan… She told reporters in Mumbai that the Congress is a silent bystander to the murders during the West Bengal Panchayat elections because it is so eager to collaborate with the TMC.
Shashi Panja, a West Bengal minister and Trinamool Congress leader, stated that there was no need to politicise the Malda incident, claiming that the two women had attempted to take something from the market.

“A group of women attempted to take the law into their own hands and began to attack them. However, the authorities arrived on scene. “A case has been filed, and police are conducting an investigation,” Panja stated at a press briefing.
