Himangshu Mohan Chowdhury, the first recipient of the Padma Shri in Tripura, passed away on Tuesday.
At the age of 84, the retired Civil Service officer and humanitarian Himangshu Mohan Chowdhury passed away.
During the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971, when he was serving as the Sub Divisional Officer (SDO) in Sonamura, Chowdhury assisted over 2.5 lakh Bangladeshis who had fled to Tripura to escape persecution at home.
He had put up tents and temporary kitchens to provide food and shelter for the refugees.
The Union government awarded him the country’s third-highest civilian honor in 1972.
The then-Bangladeshi government honored him for his “dedication and spontaneity”
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha tweeted, “Deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Himangshu Mohan Chowdhury-ji, the state’s first Padma Shri recipient.”
