Trump expected to surrender next week: Attorney Joe Tacopina told NBC News that Donald Trump will likely surrender to the Manhattan District Attorney’s (DA) office early next week. According to multiple sources with knowledge of the situation, the former US president’s legal team is in contact with prosecutors and his arraignment is also scheduled for next week.
Thursday, a New York grand jury indicted Donald Trump for paying Stormy Daniels hush money prior to the 2016 presidential election. He is the first president of the United States to face criminal proceedings.
Trump’s candidacy for the presidential elections of 2024 will not be precluded, even if he is convicted in the case. Trump submitted his election candidacy papers in November of last year.
A spokesperson for the District Attorney’s office stated that they are already in contact with Trump’s attorney to coordinate his surrender. NBC quoted a spokesperson as saying, “We contacted Mr. Trump’s attorney to coordinate his surrender to the Manhattan DA’s Office for arraignment on an unsealed Supreme Court indictment.”
To assure a safe surrender, the Secret Service will coordinate Trump’s transportation and security needs with New York authorities and his legal team.
The charges against Trump were the result of a multi-year investigation into a payment made by his personal attorney to adult film actress Stormy Daniels prior to the 2016 presidential election. After investigating a $130,000 payment to Stormy Daniels in an attempt to muzzle her about an alleged affair, a grand jury voted to indict him.
