Rishi Sunak has sought a reset with France following the deterioration of relations under his successors Boris Johnson and Liz Truss. He hopes to collaborate with Paris to combat the large number of migrants who arrive in small vessels in southern England.
In November, the United Kingdom and France inked an arrangement worth 72.2 million euros ($74.5 million) to intensify efforts to prevent illegal migrants from risky crossings of the English Channel.
Friday’s meeting is also anticipated to place a high priority on the issue, with Sunak expected to bring it up in an effort to prevent border incursions.
A source at Number 10, the prime minister’s office, stated that it was crucial for London and Paris to collaborate on the global issue of migration in order to increase surveillance and crack down on the criminals operating the boats.
The summit on Friday will be an opportunity to do just that, according to a source.
