The US Treasury Secretary, Janet Yellen, met with her Chinese counterpart on Wednesday, promising to work to “manage disagreements” and “avoid competition from becoming anything ever near conflict” as the two countries try to mend their icy relations.
Meeting between Yellen and Vice Premier Liu
Since their presidents agreed in November during their first in-person meeting to explore for areas of potential cooperation, he is the highest-ranking contact between the two countries and is currently in Zurich.
Liu stated that he was willing to collaborate with the United States and China to find areas of agreement.
His advice was to keep talking and sharing ideas no matter what came up.
According to a summary released by the United States Treasury, the two sides discussed and agreed to further cooperation on issues involving financing for fighting climate change and to support “poor nations in their clean energy transitions.”
According to the transcript, Yellen also has upcoming travel plans to China and will be pleased to host her Chinese counterparts in the United States.
The two countries’ economy are facing divergent but interconnected difficulties in areas like trade and technology, which is why this conference is taking place.
In her opening remarks to the press, Yellen said to Liu, “While we have areas of difference and we will address them directly, we should not allow misconceptions, particularly those originating from a lack of communication, to unnecessarily harm our bilateral economic and financial relationship.”
