On Saturday, the legendary playback singer Vani Jayaram, who sang over 10,000 songs in 19 languages, including the immensely renowned Hindi song “Bole re papihara” and was recently nominated for the Padma Bhushan Award, passed away in this city.
She was 77 years old and lived alone in a downtown apartment where she was found dead, according to police, who added that she had a cut on her forehead and that an investigation is ongoing.
Vani Jayaram’s husband predeceased her and she had no children, the singer’s domestic assistant revealed.
In her long and famous career of more than 50 years, she has performed a wealth of unforgettable songs, such as ‘Bole re papihara’ from the 1971 Hindi film Guddi, ‘Yezhu Swarangalukkul’ from the 1975 Tamil film Apoorva Ragangal, and ‘Malligai En Mannan Mayangum’ (1974 Tamil movie Deerga Sumangali). She has worked with notable musicians such M S Viswanathan and Ilaiyaraaja. J Jayalalithaa, a former chief minister and a prominent figure in her time, was among those for whom Vani Jayaram has sung.

Born in Vellore, Tamil Nadu, with the name Kalaivani, she was a multilingual vocalist. She has sang over 10,000 songs in 19 languages including Tamil, Malayalam, Hindi, Telugu and Kannada.
Chief Minister M K Stalin expressed sorrow over her passing and noted that he had recently congratulated her on receiving the Padma Bhushan Award. Stalin stated in his condolence statement, “It is unfortunate that she passed away before receiving the Padma Bhushan Award.” The governor of Telangana, Tamilisai Soundararajan, was among the multitude of individuals who expressed sorrow at her passing.
She exemplified modesty and was a personification of modesty. She possessed uncommon qualities, such as appreciating the talent of other musicians, according to the musician and singer Mahathi.
After informing Vani Jayaram’s relatives, the police were able to unlock the apartment door around 1.30 p.m. in the presence of Vani Jayaram’s family. The singer’s maid reported that she reported for work on Saturday as normal. She told reporters that despite continuously pressing the calling bell, she received no response. She stated that she immediately notified the singer’s relatives, who then contacted the police.
