In response to the alleged gang rape and murder of a Dalit girl in the North Dinajpur district of West Bengal Kolkata, the chairperson of the State Commission for the Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR), Sudeshna Roy, stated on Sunday that the victim’s family members are “fed up” with the media attention and want to mourn their daughter in peace.
Sunday at a press conference in Kolkata, the chairperson of the SCPCR stated, “The dalit girl murder incident involves a minor female. We recorded the details of the incident but resolved not to make them public.”
She reported that the child rights commission had spoken with the family and assured them of all possible assistance.
“Before departing for Kolkata, we spoke with the family and assured them that we will seek the harshest punishment for those found guilty,” Roy said, adding, “we assured the family that we are with them during this difficult time.”
Roy added that she gave her phone number to the victim’s relatives and asked them to contact her directly if they needed assistance.
“The family members told us that they were sick of having so many visitors over the past few days,” Roy said, adding, “They were also sick of being repeatedly questioned about the incident.”
On Thursday, the corpse of the missing child was discovered by the locals. On Friday, the community held a demonstration demanding justice for the minor.
In response to the incident, the head of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights, Priyank Kanoongo, blasted West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday, accusing her of protecting “incompetent (police) officers” of the state.
NCPCR chief told ANI, “The CM is always trying to save the incompetent officers here. I consider Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee incompetent regarding the safety of minors in the state. Due to her negligence incidents happen and children perish.”
He added, “And later, based on the CM’s order, these incidents are covered up.”
Kanoongo also claimed that the state government makes errors and then attempts to cover them up. He noted that this type of behavior consistently disrupts the commission’s work.
“The behavior of the state government has been the same for years; they make mistakes and then try to cover them up, and as a result, they constantly obstruct the commission’s work,” he asserted.
Kanoongo criticized the district magistrate, stating, “The DM is incompetent.” We are awaiting his arrival, but he has not yet arrived. The family also alleges that the accused has political ties.”
Earlier on Saturday, the SP of North Dinajpur, Sana Akhtar, stated that the post-mortem report provided by the victim’s physicians indicates that the cause of death was poisoning.
