Watch: $42,000 US sculpture is accidentally broke by a visitor

The holiday weekend got off to a smashing start at an Art Wynwood exhibit after a woman accidentally broke a sculpture valued at $42,000.

Miami: An art collector was at a contemporary art fair when he accidently knocked over a little glass sculpture by the famous artist Jeff Koons, which resulted in the artwork being shattered beyond repair.
The brilliant blue sculpture, which was a part of Koons’ well-known “balloon dog” series, was estimated to be worth $42,000.

Several of the collectors attending the VIP preview at Art Wynwood in Miami were under the impression that the incident was a performance piece or a well arranged prank.
The sculpture sat alone on an acrylic base branded with Koons’s surname.
“I saw this lady was there, and she was tapping (the sculpture), and suddenly the thing toppled over and broke into millions of pieces,” the artist Stephen Gamson said in an interview with a Fox News affiliate in Miami. “I saw this woman was there, and she was tapping (the sculpture).”

Gamson speculated to the reporters that the woman may have touched the painting in an attempt to determine whether or not it was an actual balloon.

The cleanup of the glass fragments was captured on film by a bystander who was there during the incident.

In the video, there is a person that can be heard saying, “I can’t believe that anybody would knock that over.”

According to Benedicte Caluch, an art adviser with Bel-Air Fine Art, which sponsored the Koons sculpture, according to the Miami Herald, the woman who broke the piece did not want to do so, and the damage will be covered by insurance.

Koons is an American painter and sculptor who gets his ideas for his works from things that people see every day, such as balloon animals. Koons was not present. Even though they have sold at auction for as much as $91 million, his pieces defy preconceived assumptions of what constitutes fine art.

His balloon dog sculptures range in size from less than a foot (30 cm) in height to more than ten feet (three metres) in height, and they are available in a variety of vibrant colours.
