MS Dhoni, captain of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), believes that gave too many runs against Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 at Sawai Mansingh Indoor Stadium was a significant factor in CSK’s loss.
Throughout the innings, but particularly in the first six overs, CSK bowlers leaked runs. At the conclusion of the powerplay, CSK had given up 64 runs without taking any wickets. This paved the way for Rajasthan to set a target that was above average, given the average number of runs scored in the first innings.
“It (the target) was significantly above par. The reason was that the first six overs allowed too many runs, but the pitch was optimal for batting at that time. Even as they neared completion, the edges continued to seek out boundaries. They scored the required number of runs, and we were unable to halt them,” CSK captain MS Dhoni said after the match.
Even though he conceded 48 runs in four overs, CSK captain Matheesha Pathirana’s bowling performance stood out despite the fact that every other CSK bowler conceded a large number of runs.
“I thought his (Pathirana’s) bowling was excellent, not that it was poor. The scorecard does not accurately reflect his bowling performance.”
Rajasthan’s potent opener Yashasvi Jaiswal’s quick-fire 77(43) run kept CSK bowlers on edge. Tushar Deshpande took his wicket in the fourteenth over, but the harm had already been done.
“Yashasvi batted extraordinarily well, as it was crucial to attack the bowlers, and took calculated risks. It was marginally easier against our bowlers due to the fact that we had to judge the appropriate lengths. Even so, Yashasvi batted well at the top of the order, and Jurel batted exceptionally well at the end. Dhoni concluded, “I believe my first ODI hundred in Vizag gave me about 10 games, but the 183 overs here gave me the opportunity for one year, so this venue is dear to me.”
