West Indies and India will commence their month-long, multi-format tour with a two-match Test series at Dominica’s Windsor Park on July 12. The series will signal the start of the 2023–2025 World Test Championship for both teams. India will return to the field one month after their defeat to Australia in the World Test Championship 2023 final.
Following a second consecutive loss in the WTC final, India’s squad has undergone significant alterations as the BCCI seeks to revamp the Test side. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad have been called up for their first Test, while Cheteshwar Pujara has been dismissed.
In contrast, West Indies finished in eighth place in the World Test Championship cycle of 2021-23. The previous Test series was a 0-2 loss to South Africa. As a result of failing to qualify for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, which will be held in India, the island nation has been going through a difficult period. They failed to qualify for the Super 12 stage of the T20 World Cup earlier in 2022.
Therefore, captain Kraigg Brathwaite will be keen to reverse his team’s fortunes in the upcoming series. Notably, India and West Indies have met in 98 Tests, with India winning 22 and West Indies winning 30, with 46 matches terminating in a draw.
Since 2002, India has been undefeated against the Windies in Tests, having won eight consecutive series. The last time the West Indies defeated India in a Test match was in May 2002 in Kingston, so they will be keen to turn things around in the forthcoming series.
