London: Preet Kaur Gill, the first Sikh woman elected to the British Parliament, said she had to increase her security after receiving an email containing the threat “watch your back.”
Preet Kaur Gill, age 50, is a front-bench politician as the shadow secretary of state for international development and Labour MP for Birmingham, Edgbaston.

She told ‘GB News’ on Saturday that she feared for the safety of her family as she carried out her duties as an MP, holding “surgery” meetings with her constituents.

“It was straightforward. Constantly being with my daughters in the constituency is a source of concern. There, my family resides. It really contextualises the nature of your work “She told the broadcaster.

“This most recent direct threat has me concerned. When you, as a woman, want to address injustices and care about issues affecting your constituents, you are confronted with individuals who believe it is acceptable to say such things to you. I could not believe that this individual used their workplace email to make such a threat “She stated,

“Typically, the majority of individuals would use a pseudonym or experiment with various methods to create a type of hate campaign. I’ve also been the target of numerous hate campaigns organised through WhatsApp groups “She continued.

She disclosed that she had notified West Midlands Police of the threat and that she employs a bodyguard for protection.

“I discuss the matter with my staff. I worry about their safety as well as my own. I don’t want to curtail my operations, I don’t want to move to an appointment-based system, I want to be able to be in my community and make sure that people have access to me “she observed

In terms of support, being the first female Sikh MP in the UK Parliament can be “quite isolating,” according to the prominent politician.

“Therefore, I believe it can be quite difficult as a woman to face so much hatred and censure when attempting to do good,” she continued.

In December 2021, Gill was criticised on social media for a tweet she later erased that blamed a “Hindu terrorist” for the Golden Temple attack in Amritsar.
