In the aftermath of a sailboat sinking in rough seas close to the seaside resort of Steccato di Cutro, which is located on the eastern coast of Calabria, rescue workers have certified the deaths of at least 64 people. Eighty people had been brought to safety, but it was suspected that there were still more people missing.

The Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement in which it said, “With great sadness, we learned… that 80 Afghan refugees, including women and children, who were travelling from Türkiye to Italy in a wooden boat, drowned and died in the southern sea of Italy.” The statement was made in response to the news that the refugees had been travelling from Turkey to Italy.

“The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan prays for forgiveness for the martyrs and patience for the families and relatives of the victims,” the statement continued, referring to the name the Taliban have given their government. “The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan urges all citizens once again to avoid going to foreign countries through irregular migration,” the statement concluded.

The ship had left the port of Izmir, which is located in western Turkey, and started sail. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for refugees, almost half of the people who arrived in Italy from Turkey via water in 2017 were Afghans.
