Wednesday’s 4-0 victory over Mainz enabled Joo Cancelo’s new club Bayern Munich advance to the quarterfinals of the German Cup DFB. A day after coming on loan from Manchester City, the  Portugal left defender started on the right side and assisted Eric Maxim Choupo-opening Moting’s goal in the 17th minute.

It was Bayern’s first victory of 2023 after beginning the Bundesliga season with three draws, and it was the first time since 2020 that the Bavarian powerhouse reached the German Cup DFB quarterfinals.

Cancelo capitalised on Mainz’s poor defence by sending a cross to the far post for Choupo-Moting. In the 30th minute, Thomas Müller assisted Jamal Musiala in scoring off the right post.

Alphonso Davies scored the game-winning goal with a header off a free kick given by Kimmich in the 83rd minute. The visitors resisted intense pressure from Mainz in the second half.

Before Davies’ goal, Mainz head coach Bo Svensson was dismissed. After the game, referee Deniz Aytekin stated that Svensson questioned the fourth official if they were all blind.

Alexander Hack received his second yellow card in the 86th minute for Mainz.

On February 14, Bayern travels to Paris Saint-Germain for the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 matchup.

Musiala limped off the field during halftime but returned to finish the game. Both de Ligt and Ryan Gravenberch need medical attention following violent second-half crashes. Both persisted.

Earlier, defending champion Leipzig overcame Hoffenheim 3-1 to advance. Tuesday saw Union Berlin and Stuttgart advance to the quarterfinals. Next week, there are further third-round games.
